I've used delivery and collection multiple times. The service is excellent. Unfortunately, I have never eaten in and as such cannot speak to the atmosphere.
Regarding the food, I have had their chicken fried rice a great many times, and I must say it is delicious. Whether a hearty lunch midway through exam season or comfort food on a cold night in their fried rice has served me well and I would highly recommend to anyone that enjoys chicken fried rice (image attached). Moreover, I have some experience with their appetisers and I must say both their spare ribs with salt and chilli, and their won tons are phenomenal. Also, as of 24/10/2024 the delivery variant of their spare ribs with salt and chilli comes with 6 ribs and they are all a decent size (image attached).
Also, I have found their portions are very generous and so one may struggle to finish fried rice and spare ribs in one evening and as such in the past I have put the spare ribs in the fridge and they are still great the next morning. If you prefer not to do this I would recommend you get the won tons which only comes with 4 won tons and as such is suitable for a lighter meal.
Overall, highly recommend.
Update:
Since my prior review I have enjoyed another couple of Mr Chilli takeaways. My most recent order included Soft Bean Sprouts Noodles, Egg Fried Rice, and Fillet Pork in Sweet & Sour Sauce Sichuan Style (photos attached). I'll be honest I wasn't a big fan of the sweet and sour as although I adored the fillet pork I was not a fan of the sauce. The noodles were fantastic and the egg fried rice was pretty standard. Read moreMr. Chilli was the first Chinese restaurant I fell in love with as an international student. It quickly became a comforting spot for me—quiet, familiar, and with consistently good food. Their chilli chicken, fried rice, and custard buns were my go-to order every time I visited.
However, over time, my experience with the service started to change, especially after trying a few other takeouts on the same road. Unfortunately, I began to notice a difference in how staff treated customers based on ethnicity. As a South Asian, I couldn't help but feel like the service was more welcoming and attentive toward Chinese customers, while others, including myself, were often met with indifference.
On my last visit, the experience left me quite disappointed. The waitress was visibly cold and slammed the plates down on our table without a word. The fried rice was also overcooked, dry, and hard. Although we didn’t complain—partly because the restaurant was packed—we did leave feeling a bit disheartened.
It's a shame, because the food used to bring me back every time. But when service consistently feels unwelcoming, it overshadows even the best meals. I truly hope the management reconsiders how they approach hospitality, especially in such a diverse neighborhood where all customers deserve to feel...
Read moreThe food is tasty, but it always gives my friend and me a stomachache. However, the service is by far the worst I’ve ever experienced. The staff are consistently rude, unfriendly, and seem annoyed with us every time we visit.
Last night was the final straw. The woman taking our order had an unnecessary attitude from the start. Later, we ordered a dish, but what we received was not what we were told it would be. We politely declined it without making a fuss, yet the staff reacted by making a huge scene. They started yelling across the restaurant, drawing attention from other diners, and even laughing at us—both behind the counter and, at times, to our faces—while speaking in what seemed to be Mandarin or Chinese.
The entire situation was incredibly uncomfortable, especially since we remained polite and respectful throughout. It was an awful experience, and I won’t...
