Visited with my dad, brother and son. I'd booked a table because it was Sunday and we were eating at 5pm.and I guessed rightly that it would be very busy. This is my second visit to the newly refurbished Greenhills which is now a Stonehouse Carvery. The layout has been reconfigured to create space for the pizza area, it's hard to tell if there is now more seating available, overall the the interior is lighter and brighter. Yesterday's visit was at a very busy period with lots of people seated and eating and many more coming in. The main seating area is very noisy when full but the areas by the main entrance and near the bar are quieter although busy. Food is ordered at the bar, although I had to queue it moved quite quickly. If one of your party orders pizza you are given a small phone like handset which buzzes when the pizza is ready which means everyone can get their meals and eat together at the same time. The salad bar is a good addition, available for both pizza and carvery choices. It as well stocked and the items looked fresh. Carverys are always a mixed bag, it's hard to keep vegetables at their peak when sat in dishes on a hotplate for hours on end even given the turnover of customers. I chose the beef which turned out to be very fatty, stringy and tough. More reliable quality is usually the turkey or gammon. Dad had the sausage carvery, the sausages were tasty but the chips are again left in a container on the carvery hotplate and it does nothing for their taste. My son chose the ham and mushroom pizza which tasted fine and was well presented. Puddings are the usual offer of sponge pudding and custard, ice cream or chocolate fudge cake. Also milkshakes or "freakshakes" with cream, sweets, doughnuts, jelly beans and anything else handy thrown at them. A sugar and calorie overload waiting to happen which seem to be aimed at kids. The staff were run of their feet although smiling and pleasant throughout. I don't know how the carvery staff cope in the stifling heat from the hotplate area and this is the same in all Carverys I've ever visited. Why isn't there any air conditioning? There wasn't much contact with serving staff at the tables not even the usual "all okay with the meal". The toilets have been repainted but the womens loos remain too few and too cramped a universal complaint I know. We can't stand to pee and more often than not have to take younger children in with us and yet the size and number of toilets are never included in refurbs. Weirdly in the space immediately outside the loos there are loops of black cobwebs hanging from the picture rail and ceiling. I guess they weren't painted over during the redecoration. I've read on other reviews that these places shouldn't be judged harshly because they are a relatively cheap outlet for food. I don't agree entirely with that sentiment but maybe we need to ask questions about the standard and quality of food we expect as consumers and the price we are...
Read moreGood food, lovely waitress. Very clean and well set out for the disabled. Went on 16/5/23. Met by a lovely waitress called Siobhan, had the carvery, everything was absolutely fine. Siobhan still had time to smile as she was busy clearing and cleaning up after customers, she's a credit to your establishment. Plate says it all. Went again today 3/8/23 with wife, daughter and her partner. Siobhan was there once again with that beautiful smile, making sure we had everything. All had carvery and there wasn't an ounce of food left on the plates. Daughter was surprised how nice the restuarant was. Very good day. Thanks again to Siobhan and Angie who made us welcome. 31/10/23. Had a beautiful carvery, even ordered a takeaway carvery, beef and gammon was lovely, plenty of vegetable choice. Siobhan was dressed as Wednesday Adams, very convincing. Once again, a nice visit. 19/04/24, another lovely visit, my best waitress Siobhan was there, as wonderful as ever. Another brilliant waitress was there as well, I think her name is Jackie or Natalie. Fullof smiles as usual. Food was delicious, hot, and loads of it, served by a chef named Dave. Meat was very tender. Not a single bit left on my plate. Will be there again soon....
Read moreAfter over 75 baffling minutes of waiting for food that never appeared, we were met not with an apology, but with the manager Angela’s sour customer service technique: “I’ll refund you, and you can go!” Another diner nearby chimed in to say his food was awful, after a 1 hour wait — Angela’s response? A shrug and a swift exit. This woman cannot run a bath, nevermind a pub. So unbelievably rude.
Meanwhile, nearby a couple of OAPs (who ordered way after us, but got their food first...after a mere 45 minute wait) poked at their stone cold food like archaeologists unearthing relics from the Ice Age. They looked so upset, but too terrified to complain.
The only saving grace? Barman Tom, who deserves a medal for simply acting like a decent human being. Angela had at this point decided to hide from everyone.
Avoid The Greenhills unless you're into rudeness, disappointment, and watching pensioners suffer through sub-zero fish & chip dinners. 0 stars. Would give...
