As a Black woman visiting from abroad, I have had several deeply uncomfortable experiences at Café Nero in Coulsdon with the manager. On multiple occasions, he refused to serve me, refused to greet me but would go out of his way to greet white customers, and even walked around me in a way that made me feel like I was being treated as less than human. His behaviour was demeaning, disrespectful, and unacceptable. I raised this issue directly with Café Nero, but my concerns were not taken seriously. This makes me feel that the problem is not just with one manager but is reflective of a wider organisational culture that does not value inclusivity or respect for Black customers. No person, regardless of race, gender, or background—should feel unwelcome or disrespected when giving their business to a café. The drinks that we ordered was a Hot Chocolate Milano and a White Chocolate mocha and this was a hefty 7.20 for these drinks.
What we received was half a glass of hot chocolate and the rest of distasteful and frothy whipped cream. The whipped cream tasted like it was gone off and we just picked it off and put it on the paper towels.
The white hot chocolate was nice apart from the whipped cream on top. There was no complaints for that, a full cup.
The staff that was servicing us was relatively nice but I feel like they could've done a better job with asking for allergies, and speaking up so we could actually hear them.
The surroundings and the seating was a very cosy and home like feeling, with soft and cushiony seats. The general volume of the cafe was quiet so we didn't have to shout when talking to each other.
All in all, I rate this cafe Nero a 2/5 stars due to the drinks being overly priced and the contents tasting...
Read moreIve been here 4-6 times a week for the last month. The service here has been absolutely terrible. There is only one male staff that is quite friendly, which really contrasts the disgusting attempt at customer service the other staff attempt to provide, management included. Everytime i order from here the staff act like robots, with no human interaction and they couldnt care less. They hate their jobs and it shows. On many occasions the place is a pig sty as well as multiple tables are dirty and force people to sit on these dirty tables. I have never made a personal complaint to the staff, because they simply wouldn't care and I dare say the service would get even worse then this absolute disgrace they call a standard. It's a shame because the staff are actually competent and have a nice venue with good ambience but as far as compliments go thats all i can offer unforunately.
