We'd been here late last year before the refurb and had a lovely, large roast, so thought we'd try it out again on our way past this afternoon. The new decor makes for a pub that looks wonderfully welcoming on a cold winter's afternoon, but unfortunately, the service tells a very different story.
Our simple question ('Do you have a Sunday menu?') was met with rolled eyes and minimal information. We were told that they had chicken, beef and pork, but that he wasn't sure which were still available and couldn't tell us which trimmings came with each. When I asked whether he could find out, he walked away, spoke to a colleague at the other end of the bar, and then proceeded to serve other customers. Thinking that he might come back, I waited for a further 2-3 mins, but gave up when he moved on to his third customer. I put this down to the bar being busy, and decided not to trouble him further by asking again.
We took a punt on the chicken, which, as it happened, was available, and came out fairly swiftly. Although the portions were larger than average, it lacked in flavour and was stone cold but for the gravy, which, at £14 a pop, was fairly disappointing.
Forgiving all of this, we decided to stay for after-dinner drinks, and perhaps a spot of Monopoly. However, when approaching a now near-empty bar to ask if they held board games, we were met with yet more rolled eyes, and an 'I'll have to check', followed by a faux attempt that involved pretending to look in amongst the glass racks for all of 3 seconds (literally). It was at this point that we decided to forgo the drinks in favour of a friendlier environment. This guy obviously just couldn't be bothered to do anything but the bare minimum, had a real attitude problem, and lost the pub business as a result.
Certainly won't be going back here. If it had just been the cold and flavourless food, we might still have popped in for drink or two, but any establishment that tolerates sullen, unhelpful and frankly, rude bar staff doesn't deserve...
Read more1st visit here for food even though we’ve had a pleasant experience going for drinks previously. Took the gamble of booking a table for food when friends of ours came to visit. Our overall experience was ok but not great.
Positives: nice location, good decor, spacious, clean, excellent drinks selection which were all well served. Staff were friendly and welcoming.
Negatives: the pub was quiet, but the service wasn’t particularly attentive. We kept having to go to the bar to find someone when we wanted more drinks even though it was table service. The food menu was fairly generic and quite poor for such an expensive pub. Food presentation was poor: if I’m paying £15 for a burger I’d like it to at least look nice, but it was on a bare plate with a handful of what looked like McDonalds fries next to it. The fries didn’t even cover the bare plate space. There was no garnish or any attempt to make it even look like this was a gastro pub. The food itself was reasonable, but certainly not outstanding by any means.
In summary, I’d say this pub is great for drinks, but there are much better options...
Read moreClockhouse is one of my favourite go to pub that serve the most amazing Sunday roast, even if I say so 🤣🤣!!! We went there today to celebrate a family event and I was so happy with my choice of suggesting the Clock House!! Most of our party went for the Sunday roast, I chose the beef which went down a treat however I did make a point of using a serviette as I have a tendency to make a mess of myself, especially with good food! The kids menu was good. There was a choice of food to please my nieces appetite, we decided to have the main and I’m so glad we did otherwise we wouldn’t had room for afters! I’m really happy that the clock house have put back sticky toffee pudding on their menu as it was missing when I went there earlier this year. Great service by the staff, very attentive even when we spilled a drink! Just such a great, welcoming atmosphere! I will definitely come back. How could I not? It’s right on my doorstep! Best pub to do a fabulous Sunday roast, even if it’s in South London! Give it a try you won’t be disappointed...
