Place is very nice but the service was the worst I’ve ever seen. No harmed feelings but it was just plain terrible. Went for a late lunch with a friend. Ordered a coffee and wine and a couple of sandwiches, and the guy had to come to ask twice what drinks we had ordered. A woman that seemed more in charge came very polite and apologetically asking a third time several minutes later what drinks we had ordered, which was already strange. ‘He forgot, sorry’. We had our drinks and about forty minutes later I went to ask about our sandwiches. She had no idea we’d ordered food, which by the way wasn’t even available anymore. Another time ‘he forgot, sorry’. I was shocked. Waiter forgot twice about our drinks, plus completely forgot our food order (!!!) Girl offered to cancel our order, said again he had forgotten but she didn’t seem surprised that he forgot one order in a place with four occupied tables. Guy didn’t even look at us when he came to say drinks were in the house. No words. I am sorry, they weren’t rude or anything like that, which would have been much worse, but the service was appalling. Something had to be said. We didn’t react angrily because it was just so shocking we were lost for words, and they didn’t have an attitude, but it annoyed me that neither of them seemed too surprised or bothered about this, just like ‘so he forgot, big deal’. We just had to leave...
Read moreFriendly staff when I first arrived with the greeting... "Hi honey how are you?" Ordered a flat white (£2.40) with soya milk. Then charged £2.80? Questioned this and was told there is a 40p extra charge for soya milk? I said it would be polite if one was told first that this was the case. I was then told that they presume people order soya because they are allergic and that the individual knows there will be a surcharge. I told them that some people may be just intolerant or have a preference for soya; still doesn't excuse the hidden cost. Then they told me that everyone charges for soya. Mmmmm, do some research 'honey'. All the big guys - Costa, Pret etc do not charge anymore - plus you got to hand it to them, they make consistently perfect flat whites every time. I'm all for the independent cafes but get your quality correct. Left with my very expensive flat white to discover that it wasn't a flat white. A watery foamless cappuccino..... Took it back and got a full refund. The uber 'cool' staff' weren't so happy.....no ' bye honey' on leaving ;-) If you are going to advertise 'flat whites' make sure you cam make them. I went down the road to a little rustic cafe on the right and got a great coffee for £2.00. I'm sure there will be a backlash from this, but i'm sorry - if I'm paying £2.80 I want my small flat white...
Read moreRustic decor, welcoming warmth, ebullient servers; Cobb’s Corner is a spot of level-headed comfort in the heart of Sydenham. It is clear from the sincere loquaciousness with which each customer is greeted that good relations have been built with the surrounding area - an instant ease bringer, to be aware of built trust. A great conversation was had with the staff after eating, clearly intelligent and overtly charismatic, about where I came from and I was offered a Hello Kitty sticker before heading out (which now has taken up permanent residence on my phone case, in memory of such a wonderful experience).
I got the Cobb’s Special ‘Loxed Up’ - a bagel with salmon, dill, jalapeño cream cheese, and a small salad. Whilst the plate’s content looked fairly normal, the flavour was overflowing. The salad was colourful, with a helping of balsamic vinegar aiding the flavour. The bagel itself was simple and sumptuous and the taste sensations mixed together in harmony. This, coupled with the fast time in between my latte and food being delivered (thus meaning I could enjoy both compatibly), made lunch a congenial experience.
Should people come to Sydenham, I would certainly recommend Cobb’s Corner Cafe as a relaxed and reasonable place to take rest and enjoy. Kind staff, and well-priced, I have left feeling sated and in...
