My cat was at a vets and a friend drove us. We had two hours before we had to go back. It was a struggle to park around that area and saw the pub with a carpark. The member of staff was a friendly young man and explained that the parking was free to customers and said that we could order drinks and then order our food. The menus were on the tables. We were slightly shocked at the price of the food. We ordered a small glass of a well known cola drink out of the tap and a bottle of diet cola. That was £6.30 before ordering the food. A sandwich was roughly £10 worded nicely on the menu and just wanted something light to fill in the gap. Ordered two light snacks that came to just under £16. It was well presented on a pile in the middle of the plate with some sort of what onion things over the top. I ordered the prawn & squid with tartare sauce. When moving the bits of squid from the middle, there were bits smaller than popcorn prawns overcooked and hard and other bits larger and cooked nicely. I was trying to work out why the squid would be that different if deep fried at the same time. My friend had some chicken thing, also presented well and said that it was hard. I wouldn't return there for food again. The premises were immaculate and the food let it down. Would return for a drink if passing, as the staff were very nice. It has a beer garden patio at the front and a beer garden behind. I'm disabled and can walk with sticks and feel that the floor level ladies hidden toilet should have a sign, not as disabled, as you would struggle getting a wheelchair in of the heavy sprung door and space, though would recommend a handrail at the side of the loo, as rather low. The ladies one down the bottom of three or four stairs does not have a handrail in the more bar area to get down to them which could be dangerous and asked if they had a ground level ladies one. I took a photo of the food which I can't work out how to put on and will add later on. I went to this pub years ago occasionally and wasn't sure if it would still be there, as many are sold off and built into flats. It's a beautiful location off a busy road between Woodford and Chigwell. It needs some little tweaks. I probably wouldn't eat food there again and support a cafe/ bistro where the food is...
Read moreExcellent final dinner with partner before tier 2 lockdown comes into effect. Had a lovely meal and drink, table next to us was very loud but its Friday night so can't hold that against the pub. Was hoping for a quieter area that I had been sat at before though. Had calamari and prawns to start with Hunters Chicken and the Smokey Joe for mains. Girlfriend said the burger was great as was my chicken. Great range of food on the menu which is rare at the moment and desserts sounded great but didn't have room for any. All decent pricing and staff attentive though we used the app to order. Staff and especially the gentlemen who I believe to be the manager very strict with Covid regulations which is nice to see. Made even the regulars mask up when moving around. Only wish they would have taken it seriously when they wasn't being watched but people's ignorance is again not the fault of the pub. Overall lovely time again Crown & Crooked Billet will definitely be back hopefully in...
Read moreI really love this place. The food is tasty, very good sized portions, and arrives in perfect time. There's a lovely choice of food on the menu, and you can also have little portions of dessert if you've eaten too much but still crave something sweet! The staff are very friendly, the decor is gorgeous, especially with the Christmas lights up at the moment. You are made to feel very welcome. We are both vegetarian, and my sister was saying it was the best vegetable tart she's ever tasted, so that can't be bad! It's always been a pleasurable experience going there, I wish we lived closer or we'd be there most days, but it's definitely worth the drive. The place has got some interesting history to it too. Easy access to the carpark, lovely conservatory which is warm and cosy, the toilets are clean and well stocked, but mostly, we love the people who work there, they really make it a great experience, and the delicious food. We shall definitely be...
