My brother and his partner live locally and have done for ten years. None of us have ever been to the pub but for no particular reason, we had always intended to try it at some point. My brother locked himself out of their flat in the middle of winter whilst feeling unwell and went in. Bought a pint out of courtesy whilst waiting for his partner to come home despite not wanting to drink. After finishing his pint, the landlord threatened that he needed to buy another pint or he’d be kicked out. The landlord and lady then continued to be rude in front of other patrons until he left the pub and waited outside in the cold and pouring rain. I understand people are trying to run a business but it would’ve cost them nothing to let a paying customer stay a bit longer. And now none of us will ever be returning. What happened to...
Read moreIt's my local and I love it! In an industry where independently owned pubs are closing every day, the Duke of Edinburgh stands proud as a proper SE London boozer. Congrats to Ferghal and Chrissie for making this a safe haven for locals and visitors alike. Come and have a pint of Guinness, a packet of scampi fries and find out what a real pub is for....a place to meet, talk and forget your worries. If you have ever watched the US TV comedy Cheers then The Duke is the British equivalent....but it's a real place not an imaginary one! Plus it's got an enormous beer garden behind so very family, child and dog friendly too. What is not to like?? Btw it's a pub so doesn't serve food so if you want to eat something go to a bloody restaurant...
Read moreI have lived in the Hither Green / Lee area for 25 years and only recently ventured into this pub. What a find! Better late than never, they say, and this is a pub I've already returned to on a number of occasions and will continue to do so. A proper pub with knowledgeable, accommodating staff, a lovely, old-fashioned atmosphere, a fine selection of drinks - the Guinness is delicious - and extraordinarily good prices.
