Possibly the worst pub i've been to in years. It was a mixture of reasons why, but mostly the staff.
I get there are restrictions, but this place took the biscuit. It started badly when the manager bloke gave us a sarcastic lecture for not having the Covid 19 app ready for his inspection. Whilst we were being spoken to like children, a fairly innocuous looking man wandered in and politely asked the guy if it was ok to come and have a pint, he rudely told him to get lost basically, once out of earshot he told us with some worrying spite in his voice that this guy tries to come in without a booking all the time and they always turn him away. Wow, nice way to treat a local wanting a pint, its actually quite hilarious that this guy has presumably chosen to take a career in hospitality, and not only that is in charge of a whole pub. Anyway, once we had jumped through his hoops and weathered his smart remarks, he marched us out to a table in the garden. At this point we noticed all the staff were wearing walkie talkies, like you might see a soldier in a war speak into. This was plain bizarre, as the pub is actually quite small. I do hope they enjoyed their new toys though.
To order drinks, you had to press a stupid little buzzer for the waitress to come over and take your order. I can see how this would be useful, but our table was genuinely in front of the bar area where the waitress stood any time she wasnt serving a drink, less than a metre away. Rather than call (or rather speak) over our order to her, she actually made us press the button before she walked over a few steps to our table, it was beyond pathetic.
This waitress managed to bark at me a couple of times in our visit. Once for walking towards the building without a mask (educate yourself love, covid restrictions do not apply outside, whatever your hostile manager might tell you), and secondly when we asked to switch tables. We were smokers, and despite being outside, in our area oddly it was not permitted to smoke (fully outdoors). There were however, several tables free in the bit where you were allowed to smoke. We were not just denied a pretty straightforward and logical polite request, we were shouted at and told no. The whole time we were there (about an hour), at no point were these tables occupied, so it was clearly just pedantic point scoring by the pub's staff.
The toilets weren't that welcoming either, with huge passive aggressive posters plastered everywhere with pictures of white powder and razor blades, and warnings like "ONE STRIKE AND YOU ARE OUT!!!". if you really want to stop people doing gear in your bogs, maybe get one of your well drilled staff to stand in there constantly with the walkie talkie, and keep watch.
Basically, the whole place is a farcical fun vacuum, with ridiculous and unwelcoming staff. Im not sure which brewery or pubco owns it, but ill be sending this review to them too, so hopefully the staff are disciplined.
I spend a lot of times in pub's, but this one stands out head and shoulders as the worst i can remember. I hate to see pubs closing and turned into flats/tesco express, but this place really needs to basically sack the manager and do away with his boot camp regime, relax a little and remember you are a pub where people go to enjoy themselves, not a...
Read moreHaving seen a poster on the window of the pub, I was excited to go to the comedy here for the first time. Other guests that I spoke with in the ladies' loos were also super excited to be at this regular weekly event. It's quite special to have this in Lee, we hail from Grove Park and I'm not aware of another comedy night so near to us in South East London.
I noticed that the pub has been carefully renovated to a high quality and the decor and styling of the pub is really impressive, with original tiger tiling on the door of the main entrance.
My partner and I had food in the main pub which was absolutely delicious. Really varied menu with meat dishes and also vegan options by @patwahkitchen There is a great atmosphere in the pub and the bar service is excellent. Super friendly bar staff with swift service and a smile to boot.
At 8pm we went into the comedy club at the back of the pub which has it's own separate room. I really like this space, ample seating, the room was full so this is a popular event. We really enjoyed all the acts, entry is about £5 on the door and for three hours' worth of entertainment this is so worth it. Very professional acts and stage management. Some famous faces, too. Live DJ in the breaks playing afro- beats, R&B and hiphop, some of my favourite music so that is an added bonus. Thanks for a lovely evening, we...
Read moreI went to have dinner with a friend after hearing good things about the food on Instagram, even my friend who had been there before said it was the best chicken strips she's ever had. It's a very big open pub space and the bar staff were so nice and welcoming. Now let me get to the food. One of my biggest pet peeves is going to a restaurant and the food being disappointing but that was most definitely not the case here. I had the Grilled King Prawns for starter and it was full of flavour and juicy. I eat the whole thing head and tail and the marinade it was soaked in just made it that much more enticing. On to the main, I had the Pan fried Salmon with steamed carrots and creamy mash. The skin on the Salmon had the right crispness and the Salmon it's was moist and succulent, the creamy mash had no lumps👍🏾and the carrots had the right tenderness, soft but still had a crunch. The chef was nice enough to come and chat with us after our meal which was nice. This wasn't on the menu and it needs to be but he served us the best Potato and bread pudding with Rum & Grapenut Ice-cream I've ever had. I can honestly say this was a great food experience at Pat-Wah and I will be going back with my whole family to share this...
