Arrived at the restaurant at 7:30pm on a Saturday. The place was empty and the management sitting at the only table which was under a heater. The place was freezing! My parents and my kids had to wear their outdoor coats inside. The floor was sticky and slippery due to poor cleaning. It was a disgrace from start to finish. Such a shame as the food used to be lovely. The management need to train their staff and introduce a cleaning schedule. The area where the washbasin is to wash your hands was disgusting. The basin was so dirty. It really was alarming but we had already ordered our food.
Ordered drinks as soon as we arrived. Got some drinks is after 10 minutes. And had to remind them about the other 4 drinks about 20 minutes later. Food was cold in middle like it hadn’t been heated up in microwave long enough. The dosa had no green sambal with it. We ordered hoppers but they came out with nothing else. We had to request the sambal/lunimiris. Every time we ordered something it seems to be the bottom of their priority as they just carried on chatting after we ordered something. There was 10-15 minutes break between each of our starters. My parents ordered some rolls. We ordered some patties. But they arrived 15 minutes apart.
It really is the worst ‘restaurant’ experience we have ever had. From a dirty environment to untrained staff; it was so bad. The server didn’t even know how to open a bottle with a bottle opener. It was such a shame, ruined my father’s birthday.
The workers were not even occupied with anyone else, they just had no idea how to look after 7 guests dining at...
Read moreI've only eaten Sri Lankan/South Indian food a couple of times before and it's very different from what other "Indian" restaurants offer. I noticed this place driving through Downham the other day and decided to try it yesterday.
The menu is quite long, about 80 dishes, I think. There are no descriptions on it and there should be because most of these dishes will be unfamiliar to many people.
Anyway, I ordered Masala Dosa first. It's a large pancake stuffed with spicy mashed potato and veg and it comes with sambar and a couple of chutneys. It was very good. Quite spicy and all of the components were spiced differently. Lots of great flavours. I really enjoyed it.
I then ordered Lamb Devil. I'd describe this as cubes of marinated lamb stir-fried with peppers and onions. Was spicy, but not crazy hot. Good flavours and plenty of meat. Had it with some boiled rice which worked great. I enjoyed this dish as well.
Had a large bottle of Lion lager which was pretty good.
I went during the day and there didn't appear to be a waiter on duty. The lady in the takeaway shop served me and we muddled through despite a slight language barrier.
I'd happily recommend this place and will be back tomorrow for lunch as I have an appointment in the area.
The place is obviously new and needs a few tweaks, but the concept of a takeaway at the front/restaurant at the back is excellent and so is the food. Everyone was very...
Read moreGanesha has been our 'go to' Sri Lankan restaurant and catering service for the last 5 years. The management team have helped support catering for several large parties and celebrations among our friends and family. Including my father's 80th birthday party and vegetarian rice and curries for religious functions. Service included delivery and set up with food warmers. The menus were always individually tailored to our requests and needs. Guests always complimented how authentic, fresh and tasty the food was. From the restaurant, we order in abundance their legendary Mutton Rolls. Packed with mouthwatering flavour, plenty of Mutton pillowed in just the right amount of potato and a fresh crisp coating. Freshly fried on request is the best! Vegetarian days are easy with freshly prepared vadai, chutney and tea! Not to mention the Vegetarian Thali special. The recent addition of the Hopper stall in the shop on weekend has been a delicious addition for our Appam fixes!
This is the closest you'll get to homemade authentic Sri Lankan food and...
