Best gelato in London (even better than some artisan gelaterias Iāve visited all over Italy). Perfect amount of sugar and beautiful texture. It was love at first lick all those years ago when they first opened (10 years very soon?). You can taste the ingredients (above like actual mint leaves etc) rather than the cream or sugar. Rare to get a sorbet that isnāt cloyingly sweet. With the exception of some berry flavours Gelupo sorbets are always that perfect amount of sweet. Stand out sorbets are mandarin and coconut. Youād order them even if you werenāt avoiding dairy they are that good. You can tell they use quality ingredients to make their product and I swear you can taste the love put into it! Staff are always efficient, patient and friendly even though usually rushed off their feet serving the long queues. Worst thing is trying to decide which flavours to get (revisit old favourite or try their new exciting flavours?) Also, was sooo impressed with their service a few years ago when I wanted to buy some boxes of melon sorbet (oh yeah another standout sorbet flavour) for my dads birthday. They didnāt have any available but the lovely lady who always had a perfect manicure actually asked the chef if he could order some melons and make it for me to collect a few days later. Now thatās what I call dedication to customer service. They didnāt have to do that & they didnāt know Iāve been a faithful customer from the beginning. Nor did they know that Iāve literally told everyone I know about their gelato, including tourist strangers!! The salted caramel is worth getting diabetes for. Also love their ricotta sour cherry which is a long running classic. Too many to mention. Still remember the taste of a limited edition yuzu and shiso leaves. Would buy shares if they ever float. Thank you Gelupo - you are much...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreGelupo has long been a favourite tucked away on a quiet street in Soho, and itās easy to see why it still draws a queue. Iāve visited many times over the years, but on my latest trip, I couldnāt help but feel the gelato has lost a bit of its former magic.
Flavours are limited to 7 standard ice creams, three premium flavours and 4 sorbets with a selection of coffees and drinks.
I tried the ricotta and cherry and orange blossom flavours. The ricotta and cherry, which used to be a standout, tasted rather average this timeālacking the richness and creamy depth I remembered. The orange blossom was beautifully fragrant in name, but the flavour didnāt come through; it just tasted sugary, and again, not especially creamy.
On the plus side, the shop has had a lovely revamp. The new interior is fresh and stylishāgreen and blue walls, terrazzo floors, ice-cream-themed light fixtures, green stools and neat little hexagonal tables. It definitely feels like a place that takes aesthetics seriously.
Despite the queue stretching out the door, it moved quickly and I was served in about five minutes. Prices have increased by Ā£1 across the board since last year: Ā£5.50 for one scoop, Ā£6.50 for two, Ā£8.50 for three, and Ā£16 for a 500ml tubādefinitely on the pricier side.
It is still a Soho institution with charm and loyal fans, but the gelato quality doesnāt quite match the price tag or the polish of the...
Ā Ā Ā Read morewhere has this gelato place been all my life? what a divine experience it was to enjoy the first few rays of the springtime and treat myself to a Gelupo gelato. i was feeling a bit stressed and down, but this place lit up my whole day. I must come back as soon as possible.
going inside, I am transported into gelato paradise. with so many intriguing seasonal flavours, I had a hard time choosing, but the lady behind the counter was the loveliest server ever, and I was able to sample as I wished. i was treated like a princess!
i went for the bitter chocolate and ricotta with sour cherry. the moment i tried the bitter chocolate, my heartbeat doubled. it is literally the perfect dark chocolate ice cream. the smoothness cannot be understated, and it is the ideal level of (not too) sweet. itās gorgeous and deserved an award as a stand-alone dessert.
the cherry ricotta was exquisite as well, with juicy berries swirled through light, fluffy, milky cream. it was like eating a piece of a cloud of heaven.
bonus note: i havenāt been able to find good pistachio gelato anywhere in London until I went here. itās THE BEST.
thank you Gelupo for making me so excited for the summer and all the gelato iām hopefully going to eat from here!
UPDATE two days later: i went again and i must also recommend the peanut butter, and the mascarpone rose and raspberry very highly. irresistable,...
