“You can’t polish a turd”, is the best way to describe The George since it’s makeover. The new refurb looks nice enough. The bar is a lot nicer, but nothing changed in the restaurant side.
We used to come here all the time, and the food and service gradually deteriorated beyond belief. Having heard there was a refurbishment, we thought the problem was solved…
Upon turning up we sat outside as it was nice weather, however there was commotion amongst the majority of tables as there isn’t enough chairs for the tables.
First round of drinks, half the beers and ciders not available and no orange juice…, one job as a pub is to sell drinks, no?
Went to advise the staff we had arrived at our table to be told there was problems with the booking system… although waitress come back to confirm we could still have our table.
Upon being seated we found broken glass on our side plates…
Drinks took an age and ordering food was an age…
Waitress unfortunately had no clue about waitressing and made us all feel very on edge. Crash bang whallop while she laid tables next to us. Forgetting drinks and any engagement with us to check we had everything.
Once food arrived - very disappointing. Scallops were the size of peas and like bullets, 4 baby prawns s in a sickly tomato sauce…
Then having to get up and chase drinks…
Mains did not disappoint to disappoint…. The roast dinners had obviously been under hot plates , so either shrivelled or skin like a golf ball… covered in salty onion gravy and greasy yorkshires… the vegetarian roast came out without a Yorkshire,,, to which the waitress said,”oh do you want one then”.
Kids roast stacked up like the adults and covered in herbs so put off before she started eating…
Toilets flooded while we were there so the ladies had to use the disabled toilet. But it was locked so no one knew if it was engaged or locked…
At the end the waitress dropped cutlery in one of our guests lap and walked off without acknowledgement….
Overall this place is as shocking as it was before, if not worse with a more expensive menu….. avoid until they sort out.
We had 50% of the food taken off, but won’t be...
Read moreI have visited the George over the years a few times and it has been very good. Since it has just been refurbished I thought I would try it out. The car park being monitored by a private company requiring a registration at the bar was a negative for me giving it a more down market feel although it was easy to enter your Reg at the bar. Decor and general feel was nice and welcoming. Service was good although one member of staff ignored us standing waiting to book in, he was obviously busy on some other errand but he should have acknowledged us with a 'My colleague will be with you in a moment...' which she was. Service was fast and attentive and the booking tablets seemed to work efficiently. No complaints about service or staff. We get to food. Here is were the experience was less good. They now have a vegan menu. I ordered from this and my friend from the standard menu. We had bread and olives to share, scallops, vegan tomato and red pepper soup (starters), Spicy coconut curry and pork belly (mains), apple and damsen crumble one full size one mini (deserts) plus two coffees. Olives were good, bread was OK but a variety would have been nice. It seemed like a very ordinary brown loaf. My soup was the high light it was thick and tasty. Scallops had something sprinkled on that my friend described as like sawdust. Pork belly was OK but we both had tender stem brocoli with our mains and it was under done actually hard to cut despite its name. My curry made with aubergine pepper and chilli was tasty with a slight chilli zing but was spoilt by the aubergine being a bit over cooked and worse the jasmine rice being over cooked and congealed. It should be a bit sticky but not a gooey mass. The crumble toppings seemed under cooked as you could taste the flour in the mixture. In our very British way we did not complain on the evening because we didn't want to spoil our evening. Meal was on evening of...
Read moreWe came for a Sunday lunch with family and friends. Pub looks great from outside, well looked after and inviting. Outside seats could be wiped dry as they were all wet, so if someone wanted to sit outside, it would be a problem. (It was sunny on the day, but raining the night before) Inside looks beautiful, very stylish, clean and inviting. Nice selection of wines on the wall, as well as well equipped bar. Team was very attentive from the very beginning, always to hand, helpful and knowledgeable. Really nice first impression. However food brought the whole experience down. We’ve ordered selection of Sunday roasts and macaroni cheese on the side. Firstly, all our macaroni cheese was almost cold, so that wasn’t good start already. Sunday roast looked nice, but I would expect slightly more for the price. Beef roast came with two thin slices of beef, one carrot and one parsley with couple of roasted potatoes. Beef was tender so I can’t complain, but the highlight of the dish was gravy and pudding. I’ve ordered trio of roasts and must say was disappointed, pork belly looked almost like an overcooked slice of bacon, chicken leg was small and dry and one very thin slice of beef. A bit disappointed with Sunday roast. Good quality overall but based on very good experience from the service and the ambience, food scores the lowest. Desserts were decent, but again, missing the mark. Deconstructed cheesecake, I would have preferred a nice slice of tasty, beautifully presented cheesecake but received 3 roughly shaped balls with dusting of crumble on the plate. Brownie was too soft, more like a cake/mousse. We did enjoy the stay, as ambience and service was great, but food needs to improve for us to come...
