Came here late afternoon on Thursday, and had a terrible experience that left me confused, frustrated, and upset.

To get things clear: I’m no wine snob. My usual order is always house white wine, so I’m used to all sorts of varying quality and taste. But whatever was in my glass that day was repulsive… it tasted of mildew and petrol. In the most literal and serious sense, it didn’t bear any resemblance to wine, and certainly nothing that could be knowingly cleared for human consumption. I confirmed this with others, who pulled faces of disgust and confirmed that something tasted very, very wrong with it.

Ultimately, there was no way I could stomach drinking any more beyond a few sips, and even if I could, I wasn’t convinced that doing so wouldn’t make me very ill. With reluctance, I was left with no choice but to raise my concerns at the bar.

I apologised first and foremost, but explained that the wine tasted rotten and they might want to check it wasn’t their bottle. Unfortunately I was met with an attitude of complete dismissal by the woman at the bar (seemed a senior member of the team), who immediately said “that’s just the taste of the wine”, to which I said it definitely wasn’t. She dismissed this again, and with a patronising tone explained that this is simply what I should expect when ordering a house wine. ‘Let me get this straight: you ordered a house wine and you’re surprised that it doesn’t taste good’.

Another customer beside me at the bar began laughing, clearly finding the whole thing hilarious. While I tried to explain to the woman that I drink house white wine often so know very well what to expect, she chose to engage with this other customer instead: apparently bonding over their shared disapproval of my behaviour. I felt embarrassed, ridiculed, and judged.

Desperate to reach some sort of common understanding, I invited the woman to taste my glass (if she did, she surely wouldn’t continue to dismiss me) but she replied that she could tell even at a distance that ‘it is just the taste of a house wine’.

The patronising tone continued as she offered me a new glass of a different wine that would be more suited to my tastes, much to the amusement of the other customer. I said that another house white would be more than good enough, as long as it was from a new bottle.

With dismissive amusement and without looking up from his phone, the other customer said “she’s offering you a free glass of wine! just take it” and exchanged some more chuckles and comments with the woman behind the bar.

I felt completely humiliated. I took my ‘free’ glass of something that thankfully didn’t taste of poison, and walked away close to tears.

I felt judged, disrespected, and confused about how I could’ve handled things any differently.

Needless to say, I won’t be coming to this...

In the heart of the city, where the streets hum with life’s own rhythm, there lies The Greencoat Boy, a haven not just of brick and brew, but of warmth and soul too. Within its walls, Shan, Kash, and Devicka, they stand not merely as stewards, but as the very heartbeat of this place. With a grace as smooth as jazz and smiles as wide as the horizon, they weave a tapestry of care and camaraderie, making every patron feel not just seen, but known.

Here, every greeting is a verse, every service a stanza of dedication and professionalism, sung in the key of genuine kindness. It’s not just a pub, it’s a poem, where every visit is a line, every experience a refrain that echoes with the laughter and stories shared under its roof.

Shan, Kash, and Devicka, they are the unsung heroes, the custodians of joy, turning moments into memories with the ease of a seasoned poet turning thoughts into verses. In the bustling symphony of the city, The Greencoat Boy stands as a melody of its own, composed with care, served with love, a place where every soul finds a...

What a delightful find! We were looking for traditional pub food after a long afternoon at the London ExCel ahead of the 2025 marathon. We walked from St. James's Park station to the Albert after hearing how it survived the Blitz, but there was a live band playing, not unusual for a Friday night but not what we were looking for. We then were turned away at the Bay and Bracket because my 10-year old nephew was with us, and the law changed recently regarding minors in bars. Certainly not their fault, but we were disappointed. So my 2 brothers and 2 nephews and I continued to the Greencoat Boy, and their licencing allowed us to stay 40 minutes which was just enough time for a few pints, fish and chips (my brothers said the fish was a bit overdone but they sure finished it), the best steak and ale pie I've ever had and some impressive mac and cheese for my younger nephew. All the while the service was friendly, fast and apologetic for the situation. So very grateful for the bar staff and speedy kitchen.

We arrived at a quiet time Easter Sunday, phoned and they happily changed our booking to earlier as our plans changed. Liked the interior and fairy lights. On arrival the waitress wasn't friendly didnt seem happy to see us. I assume (her boss) quickly picked up on this unwelcoming interaction and spoke instead. Sorry but I much preferred this lady in terms of welcome. It's not our local, we arent from the area, we came as a family so a warm welcome meant more than it perhaps usually would. Drinks and service fine. We ordered roast beef as special Easter treat. The cauliflower cheese was hard and the beef was ropey. Not enough gravy though it was good. The roasts melted in the mouth and were lovely. But the beef most important part of the plate & it really was poor. Fat, ropes & I had to leave most of it. Can't speak much for atmosphere as only 3 other tables occupied. Enjoyed the experience being in London but couldn't recommend highly or say I'd rush back.
