My favourite sushi place in Soho where dishes are served on a quirky conveyor belt (kaiten-zushi)... Very relaxed and informal atmosphere whereby you sit in front of the conveyor belt alongside other diners and select lovely sushi/sashimi dishes from the belt like Makizushi - Rolled sushi wrapped in nori (seaweed), Nigirizushi - Hand pressed oblong mound of sushi rice that the chef typically presses between the palms of the hands to form an oval-shaped ball and a topping (the neta) draped over the ball, and my favourite Gunkanmaki (warship roll) - A special type of nigirizushi: an oval, hand-formed clump of sushi rice that has a strip of nori wrapped around its perimeter to form a vessel that is filled with some soft, loose or fine-chopped ingredient that requires the confinement of nori such as roe, nattō, oysters, uni (sea urchin roe) etc... Friendly & attentive staff so overall a very pleasant experience and highly recommended... 🍣🍤🥟🥢🍶

I've been coming here for well over 10yrs now. In Soho, to last 1yr is a success. To last over 10yrs means they are doing something very right. Nothing fussy here. Sit down, take plates of belt, eat, pay, leave. Sushi is freshly made, with some items like soup noodles, ordered from staff. You help yourself to ginger, wasabi, soy sauce and tea. Due to the self-service nature, there is no 'service' as such, but what you do ask for is done efficiently and politely. Food comes from the kitchen and sushi chef in the middle so you can see him make the sushi. By far my favourite is the prawn tempura, salmon and avocado handroll. I'm eating it seconds after the chef plates it on the belt, the seaweed is still crispy and prawns still warm. Plates are colour-coded and priced differently. I had 5 plates and a bottle of beer. Came to about £18.00. If you are in a rush, you can be in and out in 10mins. Yo Sushi can only dream of the quality here.

I was going to give Kulu Kulu 4 stars… then I saw that the only cold sake they have is made in the UAE?! What’s that about?? But to be nice I kept my rating at 4. Very disappointed with the sake selection. We didn’t wait at all for 2 seats on a Thursday around 12:30. Confused as to why the same dishes sometimes came through covered, sometimes uncovered. Some of the warm items were cold. The Aubergine are way too sweet. There’s no napkins, just tissues. The size of the maki/uramaki pieces are monstrous, too big to enjoy in one bite and fall apart if you try to enjoy in two bites. Friendly and quick service. Would not return, but based on other reviews, looks like one of the top 3 options for conveyor belt type restaurant in SoHo, Marylebone and Mayfair.

I wanted to meet a friend in town, and I knew we had limited time. Scrolling my food list I realised I had never been Kulu Kulu. Ahhh...a conveyor belt sushi place. Now I know why. But I thought why not. I had been to some amazing places for sushi in Japan and amongst them was a conveyor belt place in Tokyo.

Now in Tokyo we used ipads to order straight to our seating. So it wasn't necessarily conveyor belt but customised/automated whatever you want to call it, to order.

Kulu Kula has roaming plates created in the center by sushi chefs. The one in Brewer St has non Japanese chefs. I'm always sceptical about this but in my old age have realised that it doesn't mean they can't cut, slice or on a wider scale do the food that is not instantly recognisable with them.

Some of the food I had:

PROS: I saw an Unagi nigiri! I had to get it and it was marinaded beautifully. Good start. The prawn Torpedo Roll was perfect. Hitting the spot with it's mayo, rice and prawn. The aubergine miso. So soft and not too sharp. I';ve cooked this at home and this was balanced well.

CONS: The shrimp and the pork salad I spotted and just grabbed were OK. Nothing to shout about really.

This place is a quick stop off for lunch, though I'd be tempted to come back for Dinner if in a hurry and also for the novalty factor. As it was fun spotting plates and asking the chefs in the middle. They price the food by the style of the plates which is clever. It can add up but on the whole it was very reasonable with dishes from £2-£4 approx. A nice alternative to the long stay, fancy places you might find for Japanese food in...

Me and my partner travelled all the way to central for an hour for some sushi to only find out the place was closed…. We only travelled that far because of the good reviews and how excellent it is. Even tho we came to the place when it said it was opened online, we got annoyed as it had wrong timings at first but then when we came to the place It had lunch timings and dinner timings on a piece of paper stuck on its glass door facing the public… I believe the timings for lunch is; 12 to 2:30 and the dinner timings are 5- 10:30 pm. Then the next day me and my partner went again and this time we followed the timings on a piece of paper we arrived there at 6pm as it should have already been open an hour ago, guess what ? The place was still closed, it didn’t even follow it’s own timings on the noted piece of paper. We didn’t give up just easily we even rang the place a few times every hour still got now answer and I guess they’re closed for a while or something has happened to the business….I’m writing this review as I don’t want anyone else to be in the same situation like travelling that far for sushi only to find out it...

Food is ok for this kind of restaurants. But sometimes dishes in the rotating track are too repetitive. This restaurant is meant to be a place to have a quick dinner and move somewhere else... i did not enjoy moving seat several time in 20 minutes as staff were trying to accommodate a group of 6 people that wanted to be together. They were waiting behind me (not in the reception area) as I was finishing my dinner... putting pressure for me to finish asap. It was not only about moving places, they needed my seat as well. In addition the bill was not cheap to justify this. The person in the cash point kept apologising but showed no sign of understanding about my complaint.I was not even offered a discount and I did not finish my dinner completely. Finally, I went somewhere else to have a complete a good dinner in a more relaxing environment. I like sushi and that is why I went three several times, but the space is very limited and specially in winter you feel you are sharing even germs with other people you...
