We heard about La Nonna through the Instagram account @bestofbrixtonldn (make sure to check the account out if you live in or are visiting Brixton). Fresh homemade pasta made in house everyday, we had to give a try.
From the moment we set foot in the door, you could fee the atmosphere of the restaurant, like going over to Nonna’s for Sunday lunch.
The service was incredibly friendly, professional and attentive. All of the staff were knowledgeable about the menu and made great recommendations.
We don’t things in half measures so we went for the full experience from bread to limoncello.
The drink menu was Italian drinkers dream, a wide selection of Italian wines from varying regions across the country, Italian beers like Birrra Moretti and a cocktail list featuring the beloved Apreol Spritz of course. We went with the house red wine, it was a fantastic choice, fruit forward with hints of cherry finished the light tannins at the back.
We started with the fresh baked focaccia with olive oil, olives and the pasta crisps. It was a perfect way to get our pallets excited for what was to come. We of course kept some bread on the side to mop up our sauce afterwards.
As many of of our group are vegetarian, we for went 3 veggie pastas and 1 meat; Arrabbiata Radiatori, Funghi Selvatici E Tartufo Tagliatelle, Pici Cacio E Pepe & the ‘Nduja Mascarpone.
All dishes were prepared to perfection. The handmade pasta was the start of every plate though with the classic Italian flavours bringing it all together. The tomato based sauces were fresh with warming spices, while the cream based sauces were velvety in texture and gave you that comfort food feel.
We then moved on to something sweet with their tiramisu, chocolate torte and gelato. The tiramisu was light and creamy, flavours of vanilla mascarpone, fresh espresso and just a hint of amaretto marries beautifully. The chocolate torte was served warm with a scoop of vanilla gelato.
We ended the meal the traditional way with an espresso and shot of limoncello, salute!
We can not recommend La Nonna enough, great atmosphere, incredible food and an honest Italian experience in the middle of a...
Read moreWe went here on our last night in London because it was close and I had a vague craving for cacio e pepe. We almost ordered Deliveroo but I pushed for going to eat in, and I'm so glad we did. The decor is cute (and I wanted to ask if we could buy coasters but totally forgot by the end of the meal) and the staff are friendly.
I'm on the hunt for the perfect lemon drop, which is essentially the same as their cello drop. I was hesitant because of the mint listed on the ingredients but as soon as I took a sip I said "well, this is it" out loud to my boyfriend. So at that point we started joking about having to come back just for that.
For mains, I got the cacio e pepe and he got the mushroom pasta. We both took a bite of our respective pastas and went 😳 and I literally forgot to take a picture because I had no thoughts outside of how good it was. I lived in Rome for 6 months and this is literally the best pasta meal I've ever had.
My boyfriend is a huge fan of Tiramisu so of course we had to try some after how good everything had been. It furthered our discussion about having to come back just for this restaurant. I don't like it nearly as much as he does in general and it was easily the best I've had. The texture was great and the espresso flavor really came through with how light the texture is.
Overall: full send if you're interested in trying this place even a little. We are genuinely going to come back the next time...
Read moreSimply unacceptable. We had a confirmed reservation at 8:30 PM on the terrace. We arrived punctually at 8:26 PM only to find that our table (clearly prepared for two people , and explicitly mentioned by the waitress that the table was ours in the system) had been given to a walk-in customer without a reservation, seated at a table that was not theirs.
In other words, we arrived to find that the booking was useless. When the waitress realised the mistake, instead of correcting it immediately (which would have been the right and simple thing to do) she called the manager. The manager, despite the waitress clearly stating that the table was ours in the system, refused to rectify the situation and chose to prioritise a customer without a reservation.
What makes this worse is that the walk-in customer had been seated for barely a minute, had not even looked at the menu, nor ordered anything. Correcting the mistake at that point would have been logical and fair, but instead we were left without a table and without dinner.
The result: we, with a confirmed reservation and arriving exactly on time, were ignored. This was poor management, a complete lack of respect for the time and loyalty of the customer, and a cowardly decision by the manager.
Simply...
