Update Aug 2022
Terrible service today, booked on line arrived 10 mins early, waitress looked at wife and I as though we were an inconvenience, then reminded we would have to gone by 5pm.
Place 1/2 full, seated at table for 10 mins before menu arrived at table, almost as an afterthought it seemed.
No wine list, eventually brought to table.
Food as usual on par, but the service today left a lot to be desired.
Disappointing....
FYI Roast dinners now £13.50/14.50...
Update Mar 2022
Went here for the 1st time in some years today.
Still had the roast beef dinner, slightly more expensive at £13 a plate, but isn't everything, still managed to have 2 dinners, pudding, coffee, bread, water, glass of wine AND service for less than £50.
Not many places you can do that, never mind in North London.
Still well worth a visit..👍👍👍

I have eaten here for i suppose 20 years or so and the food is always excellent.
I have just had a Sunday roast (beef) and without a doubt it surpasses all others I have eaten in London and surrounding areas.
I have frequently been disappointed with other gastropubs/ restaurants roasts which never live up to the hype.
We didn't come today for roast but thought what the hell, and was surprised to say the least.
For less than 9 quid a head I wasn't expecting much but both my wife and I really enjoyed both our beef and lamb dishes.
I told the proprietor that they should be promoting their Sunday Roast.
Do yourself a favour and come here, good food at...
Read moreThis place a has gone drastically downhill. There’s no way the chef can be French. We had a “tarte Tatin” that was microwaved to mush (although the taste was delicious I didn’t order baby food). We had snails that must have been old as my partner got food poisoning bang on 24 hours after eating there and I tasted one (too late) and it was well odd. We’ve had snails several times and these weren’t right at all.
The waiting staff didn’t seem to know or care what they were doing. The first time we were asked how everything was came after being handed the bill. We were seated next to the door that doesn’t self-close on a freezing cold evening despite other tables being available.
There were some pretty unsavoury characters swanning in and out that we reckoned were gangsters on the shake down or whatever. Protection racket tackle. Anyway it wasn’t a nice vibe in there.
No wonder the whole place is plastered in various offers and they’re members of at least three different discount dining clubs. I’d have refused to pay the bill if we weren’t eating for half price.
It’s such a shame as my partner used to go in the past and has been raving about taking me there for ages. She couldn’t believe the difference. Why go here when you can go to le mercury and get great French food at a price that doesn’t need any special offers to afford in a beautiful atmosphere with well trained...
Read moreMy partner and I visited for an anniversary dinner and were told straight away that the specials had run out. They also ran out of chardonnay but the waitress let us sample some of the others before we decided on a bottle of sauvignon blanc. I decided to go down what I believed to be typical French cuisine route - french onion soup and coq au vin. They really weren't special at all. The soup tasted like a sweet onion gravy with a cheesy bit of bread in it which was hard to break up with just my spoon. I had to use my steak knife. With the coq au vin, the chicken was moist and tender but that's all it had going for it. The sauce was bland and definitely lacked something. My partner's meal on the other hand was delicious, muscles in white wine sauce and the roast shin of pork. I definitely felt envious that I seemed to pick the wrong dishes on the menu. I was equally disappointed with tarte tatin it was just mushy sweet apples with no pastry base whatsoever. Overall, my food was mediocre, will have to try some of the other french restaurants in Islington in the hope I have a better...
