One star for the ambiance only, which is pleasant. The food was mediocre to bad; it was over-priced; and the service was surly. The sea bass that we ordered as a main course was simply the fish boned on the plate at about £14. Nothing more than that. The surly waiter asked us whether we wanted vegetables or potatoes as a side order. "Why?", I asked: "Aren't there any vegetables or potatoes served with the fish?" ... "No," he said (saying this with, what appeared to me to be, some manifest irony as the notion itself was absurd at the price). When he came to collect the plates of the starters, I told him that the "homemade ravioli" tasted odd and was too salty also. It was just feedback without a request. He scowled back at me and snapped, "We sell a lot of these!" Well perhaps they do, but mine was off. It was meagre, too: a single large raviol (inedible). My guests had fanned avocado with prawns and some sort of seafood puree (or sauce) as starters. None of them ate the puree (sauce), which looked like baby vomit. The prawns were limp and soggy: cooked from frozen for sure and probably old. The sea bass as the main course might have been frozen too; in any case, there was nothing special about it. The waiter left the restaurant, finishing his shift. The owner, who had ignored us after seating us, then delivered the bill to us. It was around £100 for three people with simply a glass of the least expensive white wine each and some bottled water. A service charge was added. We left feeling that we had been ripped off. It was lunchtime on a weekday. Perhaps dinner is better, accounting for the better reviews which lured us into the restaurant. But I am not going to return...
Read morePaolos is one of the homeliest and friendliest restaurants. Staff are always courteous and efficient and in all the years I've been going for dinner I can't remember ever having a complaint.. small and traditional, it is a moment from Park Royal and not far from hanger lane tube. There is enough parking as the parade of shops and restaurants is set at the side of a small green which is also surrounded by residential roads all with adequate OS parking. The owners are simply the best and will do all that they can to assist you in making your time memorable. It is a family affair and so they are lovely people to get to know - you must ask for some magic tricks. You will often walk in and the owner is entertaining with magic! Great for solo lunch, romantic dinners, work do's / meetings or even birthday parties. We done my father's bday here (I knew that even as a last minute arrangement they would still make it special) i called up and planned it 2 hrs before. We were brought out a little cake and candle (unexpected) and the Happy Birthday song was played also along with some welcomed banter. Won't ever stop going either. There are plenty of regulars including Barbara Speaks. You really can't go wrong here. If it's a reliable, traditional Italian that you're looking for with a great atmosphere and staff that are attentive to you, try it out. You may just become another regular. Hats off to these guys, always consistent in quality and service and the restaurant itself is beautiful with some outdoor seating for warm...
Read moreBooked a table by email a couple of days before as I was eating alone as was staying away on business. Paolo's is a cosy little restaurant. I ordered a medium rare fillet steak with pepper sauce, seasonal vegetables and side of mushrooms. The steak was cooked to perfection! It melted in my mouth and was very tasty! The vegetable side included roast potatoes, broccoli, peas and carrots which were still crunchy and not overcooked. The mushrooms were in fresh garlic butter and the portion was very generous. I was talking to all the staff in the restaurant as I was dining alone and Stef who owns the restaurant is a real character! He has plenty of friendly banter and was doing magic tricks with me & other customers. Great entertainment!! I couldn't decide what to have for dessert so I asked which they would recommend between the profiteroles and the Honeycomb chocolate cheesecake! Stef advised I try the cheesecake but he also gave me a profiterole aswell which I thought was nice of him. The cheesecake was out of this world and it's got to be the best cheesecake I have ever had in my entire life! Profiterole was also good. When I requested my bill, Stef asked if I would like to try lemoncello... which i did and it was certainly a nice night cap to end the evening. I have no hesitation in recommending Paolo's restaurant. If I'm in the area again I will certainly go back...
