PizzaExpress — Restaurant in London

Popped into the Coulsdon branch with a friend this evening for long awaited get together. A friendly welcome on arrival by a staff member who gave us a choice of tables to dine at. My friend who has food allergies had lots of questions about the menu. Our waitress was so helpful and she really knew her stuff. She took our drinks order and upon returning with them said she had double checked with the kitchen and was even offering suggestions. We both had the dough balls as starters, I then went for the Classic Padana and my friend who doesn’t eat cheese went for the waitress suggestion of a cheese free pizza, where the ‘tasty toppings’ would make up for it. Our starters arrived quickly and fresh out the oven. The pizzas were delicious thin and crispy and again appeared lovely and hot. The waitresses recommendation was perfect. We had such a nice evening that we stayed longer than expected as the atmosphere and friendliness of the staff didn’t make us feel rushed. Even the manager introduced herself and asked if everything was ok with the meal. Very disappointed. Rang ahead to check if we were able to come along with a small dog. The staff member said of course over the phone. We came in, sat down, the waitress brought over menus and even a bowl of water for the dog. 2 mins later the manager came over to say no dogs allowed. I explained that I rang ahead and was told yes over the phone. The manager went to check with the 2 waitresses, both denied all knowledge. The manager came back and said no one took the call (basically accusing me of lying?) Said we could have a table outside, but then we couldn't as they couldn't find keys to unlock the furniture. My 2 children started crying that they didn't want to go anywhere else. I asked for takeaway instead. Very appaled with the service to be honest. Considering that it was a staff member who gave incorrect information they could have made an allowance (guide dogs are allowed so not like no dogs are allowed on the premises). Instead, the manager wouldn't even let the dog come in for me to pay for takeaway, making my youg child stand outside with the dog alone...

The food was absolutely delicious. The pesto pasta is a personal favourite. Yet, as amazing as the food was, what truly stood out during my visit was the service—specifically, our server, Jesus. From the moment he approached our table, he radiated friendliness and professionalism. He took the time to explain the menu in detail, offering personalised recommendations that perfectly matched our tastes. He genuinely seemed to care about our dining experience. Jesus was attentive, ensuring our drinks were always full and checking in regularly to see if we needed anything. He took it upon himself to remember our special requests, which made us feel valued and appreciated. It’s rare to encounter a server with such an excellent balance of personable charm and professionalism—a true asset to the restaurant. Not only did Jesus provide exceptional service, but he also helped create a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere that made the entire evening one to remember.
