My wife and I had always enjoyed a drink here when we lived in the area. Sam Smith's pubs are always a good place for a beverage. When visiting the area again having recently moved away, we therefore decided this should be a safe bet for somewhere to stay. Unfortunately, we were disappointed with the quality of the room and the breakfast. Upsetting, because our opinion of the place had been so favourable hitherto.
The room was not secure: the window was too swollen to close fully, and even if it had been able to close, all the catches appeared to be broken. There was also a hole in the corner of one window. Being right next to an easily accessible fire escape, this did not fill us with confidence for the safety of our belongings. It also allowed easy ingress for the nine ladybirds we counted relaxing in our room with us.
The door lock appeared not to work at all, but then we were told it did work; there was just a "knack" to it. Which means they were aware it was defective and had taken no steps to fix it. Similar negligence was shown in the hairdryer fixing hanging rakishly off the wall in the bathroom, the hilariously loose and wobbly toilet flush handle and the wackily leaking shower head.
The breakfast wasn't the worst full English I have ever seen, but it was a 6/10 at best, and the unreasonably filthy thumbnail of the man who delivered it to me, and specifically its proximity to my fried egg, did put me off quite comprehensively.
Overall opinion: lots of potential, good location, wouldn't take much time, money or effort to make staying there twice as pleasant, which for eighty-five quid a night, you have a right to...
Read moreHave you ever driven past a place for years and then, out of the blue decide to go in and then kick yourself thinking, "I should have gone in sooner"? Well don't pass up this "hidden" gem hiding in plain sight! Food was excellent English Pub classics, head chef Joshua couldn't have cooked a better half chicken or fish 'n chips. Chicken was tender, sauce and gravy delicious, roast veg just right. Fish was battered with the pub ale and mushy peas were perfect! Portion size was generous, and price good value for Richmond. For those who expect name brand drinks, it's all the Pub's 'own label', but that didn't bother us as the drink was excellent and offered a chance to try something new and nice. I wish we asked our barman's name because his service was excellent. He sat us down by the cosy fire, went and got some coal, and didn't mind that we ate where we settled. He was also kind enough to serve us drinks at our table. Food service was excellent, attentive and polite. Regarding décor the Rose of York has a country pub feel without feeling cramped and is well looked after and maintained. I know this is odd to say but for me, with old pubs I walk to the loo with trepidation. However, the Rose of York was very clean and in tip top condition which I know is a bizarre thing to write up in a review but it stood out for me enough to actually comment on. Bravo to staff and management! Keep up the good work and you'll be our new favourite pub, I can't wait to come back to try out...
Read moreBad attitude from both staff behind the bar, and useless customer service.||The first guy ignored us for a while, then had a sarcastic tone while asking what drinks we want.||The draught cola I ordered tasted like water. I've had hundreds of Cokes and cola equivalents in pubs — including Sam Smith pubs — so I know what it's meant to taste like.||When I took it back to the bar another guy was there to 'help'. I told him the problem and he didn't seem to care. I said he could try it for himself, which he did with a straw. Then shrugged and said that's what it's meant to taste like. Nothing he could do about it. I asked if I could switch to something else like a lemonade, but that was rejected.||I left the £4+ cola at the bar and went and got tap water.||I'd never return a Coke/cola that was ok. This tasted so watered down it wasn't worth drinking. In any other pub where this has happened they've immediately replaced it, or offered an alternative. No problem. Great customer service.||It wasn't just the Coke here. It was the general bad vibe from the two staff.||We went to the Roebuck pub nearby afterwards and had the usual great pub experience.||If you're looking for a good pub in Richmond, avoid The...
