Discovered The Clerkenwell Kitchen by chance as I was in the area so went in and had a look at the menu as I needed to find a restaurant for lunch. Mains were about £14 and there were a few that looked good. While I was there, I spotted this bread pudding which made me dine there. I am so glad I took a photo of the bread pudding because the presentation of that one was better the one served as the cream was not all over the place so I couldn't do the bread pudding justice. Settled for the Chalk Stream Trout Fishcakes with Marinda Tomatoes & Tartar Sauce. The roast chicken was tempting but then I saw a whole roasted chicken in the kitchen which means it is going to be reheated thus the fish cakes option. The fish cakes were made to order which explains the soft texture but had a few bones. Other than that, the whole dish was amazing and paired nicely with the tomatoes and dill dressing and tartar. Finished with the marmalade & chocolate bread and butter pudding with cream. When it arrived, the first thing I tried was the cream, I was really pleased it was not sweetened and it was interestingly warm which tasted like evaporated milk. The portion was quite big and satisfying, the best thing was that it tasted like proper bread and butter pudding with smooth egg and bread here and there. The dark chocolate complemented the marmalade orange peel nicely. Overall, I really recommend this place especially the desserts and it is good to see they serve proper bread and butter sides as opposed to the...
Read moreAlways passing by this place, so I went for coffee today. After making an order, I was looking for where to sit. The long table next to the window was taken. So I asked whether I could take one table in the main hall. One staff (the first staff) said ‘yes, go ahead.’ Soon after, however, another staff with blonde/white hair (the second staff) came to me and asked whether I was gonna have a lunch. I said no. Then she said I could stay sitting here but she might have to ‘throw you out’ to other places if people would come for lunch. Slightly offended, I said I would just sit on the bar. The first staff gave my coffee and said I could have sit there in the hall. But I said it’s all right. While I was having my coffee and finalising my work, the second staff abruptly asked me ‘have you ordered the coffee?’ I was a bit confused because 1) I had already ordered coffee when I entered and 2) I had had the half of the coffee. I replied to her yes and asked why. She said ‘oh just to make sure.’ The way she talked is like I was just sitting there without ordering coffee or food. Another offending. Later, the first staff gave me a piece of brownie, probably because of this awkward situation. Although I really appreciate the first staff’s favour, I may not come again because of the second staff. She’s rude, judging, and implicitly discriminating. I would have given one star out of five in this review, but three because of the...
Read moreSpacious, lively independent cafe founded by devoted owners. The food choices are broad and it is a misdeed not to accompany whatever you order with the delicious organic coffee, all served up by a tenacious and passionate team who go above and beyond to ensure exceptional customer service.
The mocha with a pinch of sugar is my personal favourite.
Additionally, vegan and GF options are available. The cafe is situated in a peaceful area of Clerkenwell which is known for the Sadler’s Well theatre and is an imperative corner of EC London if you are a foreign visitor looking to avoid tourist traps such as the pretentious and overly crowded Notting Hill.
I hope you stumble upon this review, so that I can I implore you not waste your money in a corporate coffee chain; stop by Clerkenwell Kitchen for an authentic cafe experience instead. Landing at Heathrow Airport is perfect if your goal is to sit in café Nero eating overpriced packaged rubbish and subpar coffee beans.
Lastly, when the café closes there are plenty of options for pubs and...
