AMAZING restaurant and store.
Now in a very much better location on Farringdon Road at Exmouth Market, London EC1 in Clerkenwell.
It's the best thing to happen in Clerkenwell for ages and it goes from strength to strength...
Put simply, the BEST souvlaki (and most authentic) I've had ANYWHERE in London. This is the real thing... there is often a line-up outside that's 30 people long. And it's full of real Greeks and Cypriots enjoying the food sitting side by side with mainly REAL locals and NOT awful hipsters.
Even now the restaurant has table service, and a lot more tables to sit down and eat - the number of people waiting to eat here is always high.
BUT BE PATIENT... IT'S WORTH IT...
Offering every kind of meat: Beef, pork, lamb, chicken, sausages, delicious sheftalia (homemade greek pork sausage), good pork loukanika, and also proper halloumi.
The meat is always tender and juicy and full of wonderful flavour but it's the pork products that are truly out of this world. Although if you love chicken or lamb, these are excellent too.
There are often specials with very authentic dishes you can only usually find when you're on travelling in Greece or Cyprus...
You can have a gyro ('yeero' ) or meat on skewers ('souvlaki') grilled over real charcoal (sometimes there's a whole sheep slowly rotating over the fire!).
Also order a whole bunch of other delicious Greek (and Greek Cypriot) sides, starters, pastries, dips and salads. The deep-fried starters are delicious. The salads are fresh. The portions are SO generous.
The staff are friendly, warm, hard-working and efficient and are a pleasure to do business with and are all Greeks. They are so happy and proud to look after their customers.
The food is very good value too and the portion size is phenomenal for Britain!
'GReat: The Real Hellenic Taste' is a MILLION TIMES BETTER than those horrible high street so-called 'kebab' shops that are all over London (and unfortunately in cities all across the UK) with the grey, greasy spits of nasty halal meat, the congealing salad, the dubious, shifty staff and distressing hygiene.
Those are the rather gross, bog-standard 'kebab' shops and they are suitable only for people rendered senseless by alcohol (you never see sober people anywhere near them...)
But put those ubiquitous, filthy, halal horrors out of your mind because at 'GReat - the Real Hellenic Taste' you get real, fresh, proper SOUVLAKI - it's a whole different affair and it's made with great love and passion which you can taste in the delicious food.
Please eat here as often as you can and support this hard-working team. It's the kind of excellent service that's rare to find outside the USA. It's refreshing to have it in London and it's truly wonderful.
PS - The old shop used to sell authentic imported Greek produce - olive oils, cheeses, olives, pastries, cookies, honeys and lots of other stuff from across the Greek world - which I also love. This is still available but in a separate store across the street and...
Read moreThe best in taste, price and quantity souvlaki shop in London. Always keep coming back, the only downside is it’s a bit far away from the city centre but it’s definitely worth a visit!
Update 30.01.2022 As we now live outside of London, we decided to visit one of the old favorites when in London for a trip. Unfortunately tonight's experience was really disappointing, ordered the Great mix grill (regular, cost £35) only to get no gyros in it at all. When asked the waiter about the gyros that should normally come with the mix grill according to the menu, she said that they do change the dish every so often and this time they decided to swap gyros with a bacon chicken skewer (only one!!!) so that the customers are not bored having the same dish all the time! So obviously the mix grill was half in size this time! We explained that we keep coming back and we have ordered this grill many times in the past and this definitely doesn't seem right and we were then told to specify that we would like gyros in the mix grill next time we order. They only gave us a free dessert in the end as a nice gesture. As a customer I would like to have been told from the beginning that there will be no gyros in the mix grill or it would be swapped with something else. Next time I might consider visiting another...
