A decadent French independent which is a real refreshing change from the chains. This lovely cafe, the younger sibling of the succesful elder brother 'The French Table' is vastly more approachable and infinitely more affordable (I doubt I'll ever venture into the Table). Quality and cosiness; it's a lovely place. I recently invited my sister inside and her face was honestly like that of a child in a toyshop etc etc. The vast numbers of pastry treats and their presentation is like travelling to France itself and to an upmarket part of France too! You can eat in or takeaway and I usually just take away a lovely pain au chocolat/chocolatine/pain au lait (so much choice) and a coffee; or if it's for a lunch either a baguette or 'traditional' baguette (I do sometimes wonder at the difference, the traditional coming with a slight coating of flour and tasting that bit nicer for sure and for that you pay £1.50 instead of the 99p for the 'normal' baguette)! Oh yes, not to mention their speciality breads, I'll often simply have a lovely olive bread loaf for lunch at home (£2.50). As I mentioned earlier, you can eat in and I've only done this the once, for a continental breakfast. £4 for a coffee, orange juice and either pastry or demi-baguette. A nice way to start the day if you have the time, perhaps on a weekend. It's certainly a nice place to be and though Maple Road is in no way hectic, you feel hidden away from the street itself and could be anywhere. They offer posh afternoon teas here, for which you must pre-book, and I imagine this would be a lovely treat for someone and a great place for a 'catch-up'! From time to time they offer special evening meals, often dishes like Moules Frites or Fish and Chips (no doubt with a very Gallic twist). Lastly, this is a French place offering much French cuisine and as such the range of vegetarian options is sadly limited. Pastries galore of course, but much if not all of the savoury fare does...
Read moreThe French Tarte have cracked the recipe for the best Almond Croissants in the world (I think!). I detest the smell of Almond extract as I find it too strong. In most of the almond croissants the almond paste is never perfect. Too strong smell and strong non-uniform taste. I dread experiencing the gush of this unpleasant taste while trying almond croissants at a number of cafés. I was awestruck when I ate the almond croissants at The French Tarte; so much that I ignored the sugar (I don't do that often) and went on to savour a second😋😋😋. The French Tarte of course do one of the scrummiest Tarts. Their Pear and chocolate tarts are my favorite. I love their flat white too; and unlike serving in a small cup, they serve Flat Whites in the Latte cups. You will have a lovely start for your day if you start it with a French Tarte coffee and an almond croissant😁. One more thing to note - they run out of these croissants pretty quickly so if you decide to have one,...

Take away from the French Tarte has redefined take away for us.
We have had some beautiful take away in our time but the bar has not just been raised, it has been sent atmospheric
The Hake with lobster and asparagus was incredible and beautifully cooked as a starter for 2 rather than a main course.
The Huntsham Farm Pork served 3 ways with potatoes and a divine port and juniper berry sauce served with their signature Heritage Carrots
You can't describe this as take away, it was like being at the French Table as the food was exquisite
