Update: this is no longer a coffee shop it’s just a private hire venue that pedals some coffee between events. I have attempted to go a dozen times in the past year only to see that it is closed for a private event. At this point what is the point of pretending to be a local coffee shop when it’s never open for locals to obtain a single coffee. Don’t waste the walk . . . (Old review from 2018 below) My favourite coffee shop in East London. Decor 10/10 Lots of seating, never an issue to stay on Food and pastries are great- toasted sandwiches and soup are great. Drinks in the evening- highly recommend one of the signature espresso martinis! Very cheap I think £8. Lovely staff, and the same friendly faces each time! Back garden is open during summer which adds space and let’s you sit outside! Also holds supper clubs with local chefs/ florists! Free WiFi, great lighting, great coffee

This cosy and hip coffeehouse is one of my favourite in the capital. The interiors are chic with wooden floorings and exposed brick walls. It's much bigger than it looks too, with a larger area at the back that features a skylight allowing loads of natural light to brighten the room. I loved that the overhanging foliages brings the outside inside. You won't find tourists in here, this is a hidden gem that only the locals know about. There's a good selection of smooth coffee, creative lattes (think matcha latte), and sweet cakes to select plus, a menu with heartier dishes like shakshuka. This coffeehouse is manned by friendly staff too. Great to work in, to socialise with friends (and even a cute date!), The Hackney Coffee Company is my coffeehouse of choice in East London.

Wouldn't serve me a coffee. Seriously. We were the only two in there and despite me asking for "an Americano" (which is posh for "black coffee"), I was told "We tend to steer people towards the alcoholic drinks and cocktails after a certain time." Being a teetotal alcoholic and proud I politely refused (and then not so politely refused the offer of a "non alcoholic cocktail"...) So I wound up with....a cold coffee. Yep. Cold coffee. With ice. Tasted as you'd expect a cup of cold coffee with ice in it to taste. The one night a year me and Mrs From Saturday try and trendy it up round here and I can't even get a coffee from a coffee company. Upside: lovely building, great toilets, and the staff were really very nice indeed despite the very close to awkward situation.

I recently moved in to the area and decided I will give this place a try after reading the somewhat positive reviews. It was a Sunday morning visit and all I was looking for was a smoothie and some healthy breakfast to wake me up after a long Saturday night. Upon entering, I was acknowledged by an Asian lady, who smiled and said she will be with me in just a moment and she went to serve food to the main floor. I was then left at the counter with a blonde lady who was just finishing an order with another customer. When she finished and it was my turn, an apprent regular customer walked in and said hi to her. Instead of going to me and taking my order, she, surprisingly, didn't even budge and started chatting up the apparent regular lady and even asking her what would she like to order! Shocking! I went to her and said that I've been waiting for a while (as the other server was still busy on the main floor). She rolled her eyes and told her pal to wait a minute. Her pal rolled eyes too and stepped aside. Finally I could ask for that smoothie I was looking forward so much to. To my surprise, I was told that they don't actually have any smoothies today and she didn't even offer any other alternative, she just waited for me to look at the menu I've clearly seen for the first time, so I chose a fresh OJ and also some bowl of oats or something like that (I don't remember exactly) with coconut milk. Order was taken, I paid and went to sit down. On my way to the table, I actually overheard the rude blonde server saying to her pal ,,sorry about that", like she was dealing with someone who bothered her. Although I felt offended by this behaviour I was hungry so I went to sit down. I saw that other customers had a bottle of tap water placed on the table after sitting down, however my table was left out for several minutes and so I had to actually get up and and ask the Asian lady for it. She apologized and brought it over. A minute later, she also came and said that they ran out of the coconut milk and if I wanted my oats to be made with a smoothie (!) instead. I said that I was told that the smoothies are not available today?! She replied that her colleague got probably confused to which I indeed agreed. I accepted the smoothie offer, food was then brought over but I was still missing my fresh OJ, for which I had to ask. Smoothie oats were very tasty and the Asian lady was apologetic hence the 2* review.

I will never...

We can’t recommend The Hackney enough as a wedding venue! When we were planning our wedding, my now-husband and I were on the lookout for something a bit different—not too traditional, with a cozy, intimate vibe. The venue’s industrial style caught our eye as soon as we walked in for the first viewing and knew right away it was the one for us.

Working with Hugo, the venue coordinator, was absolutely seamless. From our first planning meeting to the food tasting, everything felt super smooth and stress-free. Hugo really knows his stuff and made the whole process so easy for us. One thing that really stood out was the planning spreadsheet Hugo gave us. It broke down all the costs and let us play around with different options to see how they’d impact the final price. There were no hidden surprises—just total transparency.

We were a bit nervous about having an all-vegetarian menu, worried that some of our meat-loving guests might not be into it. But the food was a massive hit! Even the pickiest eaters loved it. People are still talking about how amazing the dishes were—especially the smoked butter, which was a crowd favourite.

Overall, The Hackney was the perfect backdrop for our wedding. It had the right mix of unique style and incredible...

First and foremost, we celebrated our wedding with The Hackney and we couldn't have chosen a better place. Since the beginning, planning our wedding with them has been easy, straight-fordward and honestly felt very calming having this venue taking care of so many aspects of your wedding, you basically just think about the favours and clothing and that's it. When we arrived from our ceremony, the place was beautifully decorated, the team knows very well what they're doing and they do it best. You cannot doubt this guys with the food, the quantity, quality and flavour was superb. I was very pleasantly surprised with each bite. This chef must have a Michelin star at least. The team we had this night could not be better, they were friendly, attentive and very kind, we had a QR code for everyone to upload pictures of the wedding and they helped us uploading some very nice pictures. They were always very accommodating and helpful. If ever go just for a coffee or a work session, their coffee is amazing and everyday food as well crafted as our wedding menu. Truly the best wedding venue in London. Thank...
