Solid, Thai food tucked under the Heron pub.
I was slightly concerned about some of the one star reviews before going but noticed they were all from reviewers with only 1 review.
However, our group were keen for Thai and we needed somewhere close-ish to our hotel, so were willing to give this place a try, and were glad we did!
I ordered the tom yum prawn soup and green chicken curry, while my colleagues both ordered prawn satay starters, and green chicken curry for one and roast duck with veggies for the other, all with sticky rice. Singha beers all round.
The prawn satays went down well - fresh juicy prawns with a decent sauce. But I was disappointed with the tom yum goong soup - expected clear broth with fresh herbs but had coconut milk and no fresh herbs I could see. However, the prawns were fresh and flavour was good, just right amount of spice for me.
Green chicken curry was good - a shade under £10 - hit the spot. I asked for medium spice and it was perfect for what I was expecting ie not bland and decent spice/heat.
My colleague's roast duck with sticky rice was £15 and looked incredible, ample serving size with nice chunks of freshly roasted duck with veggies. Food envy.
Service was excellent with a smile from the three staff, one of whom was happy to explain the stickiness from sticky rice comes from the extra gluten (which I'd heard before but forgotten).
Was this the most amazing Thai meal I've ever had? No, but a solid option for an evening Thai meal near Paddington that won't break the bank, and certainly more deserving than the one star I've seen on...
Read moreMy friend and I had dinner in the Thai restaurant here last night, and the dinner was fine. I would say it's average Thai food but in general no complaints about my experience in the restaurant. After dinner we decided to go upstairs for a drink. It was a bit crowded upstairs, we were told by one waitress the garden area was closing, and so she helped us look around for a table for two. She point to one small table and said we could sit there, so we walked over and started sitting down. There was a sign on the table that said reserved, but said reserved for 7:30 pm and it was already 9 pm at that point. As we were just about to sit down, a different waitress came over shouting at us (yes, actually shouting) that the table was reserved. My friend points out that it says reserved for 7:30 and it's 9 pm, the woman continues yelling at us saying "so the time is wrong" and tries erasing the 7:30 on the sign. At that point my friend and I just walk out. That was one of the worst experiences I have ever had at a bar. In no way did my friend and I deserve to have that waitress shouting at us in the middle of the bar, causing a scene, for just trying to sit at a table that we were told we could sit at. As a result of that experience I'm giving this place 3 stars, which would be lower if the experience in the restaurant hadn't been fine. I live in the neighborhood and was excited to finally try this place after having walked past it so many times, but sadly I will NEVER go back after...
Read moreI was caught short in the Paddington area in the way to visit a friend last week and stopped into this fine hostelry. It didn't look great from the outside but I didn't care as I was only planning to splash and dash. However once inside I was surprised to find such a warm and cosy pub and feeling a bit guilty ordered a drink. There was a nice buzzy crowd around for a mid week evening but it didn't feel cramped or loud. As there was a good few people eating I decided to ask for a menu and was surprised to find it was Thai food, my absolute favourite! At this stage I was running late for my friend so asked him to join me. When he arrived he was taken aback as he had never been to the place before even though he lives within ten minutes walk he didn't realise it was friendly and cosy, apparently it's under new management. We both ordered food myself a pad Thai and my friend a green curry both were excellent. We chatted to a friendly barman called Colin who was able to help us with everything we needed and ended up staying for a couple of hours. An unexpected gem ten minutes from Paddington with authentic Thai food and a great drink offering. We...
