There seems to be a pattern of a problematic security culture going by other reviews. Shame as it was an interesting venue. But I would avoid coming here if its a special event as, just like the other unhappy reviews, you could really end up with a totally ruined event over nothing.
I arrived for my surprise 40th birthday party, and the bar staff served drinks to all of my group. But when it got to my turn to order a cocktail, I was refused by the Bar Manager who suddenly appeared, advising me that he was not happy with "someone else" in my party. He said that our whole table had to be seen to drink only water for 30 minutes and that the head of security was on their way to review the situation. My partner then came over and said this was all just silly, and he would buy a drink for me. But this Bar Manager said that if anyone was seen trying to buy a drink for me, we would be forced to leave. The only reason they were allowing us to stay was because we had pre ordered food otherwise we would be forced to go (it was a surprise party, I had no idea what had been arranged in terms of food, but the Bar Manager didn't care about the meaning of "surprise" parties), I stood there wearing my birthday badge and party hat, but as my bubble was popped I took off my hat, left it on the bar and walked away feeling concerned.
I then watched each member of my party drinking their drinks and continue to be served further drinks without an issue, just minutes after I was refused service. It just made me even more confused as to why I had been singled out?
I was so annoyed, I went back to this Bar Man to say that I have just arrived to this surprise party thrown for me - I was not in charge of anything, and perhaps if there was an issue he could have raised it with any one of the other 12 people in my group? To serve only to the birthday girl such dampening news whilst no one else in my party had any issues getting served had completely ruined the moment for me.
One of the other 'nice' bartenders came over to talk to me about hour after all this. He said everything was OK - He then went and spoke another female manager about what happened - and this manager sent him back with a message that I would be allowed a cocktail and that there was no issue. This shocked me (She was not prepared to speak to my face about it nor apologise which was poor, I ended up telling her what I thought about that before I left). Thank you for your mercy and allowing me a cocktail at last! But by this point I didn't feel I could laugh or relax in fear of the Fun Police throwing me out.
I arrived with the biggest smile having had a surprise party organised for me, and left feeling sad.
The other bad reviews resonate - interesting that almost all of them relate to the inconsistent and unreasonable security policies here - they have no respect for customers; mostly females being singled out going by other reviews. The worst one was reading about the girl who got thrown out when an unknown male turned aggressive towards her, leaving "them" to take it outside; considering some of the things that can happen to lone females walking home at night this was particularly distressing and scary to read.
I'm not interested in the same copy/paste responses as the other victims reviews got, "we will feed this back/not the normal standard we expect/ providing extra training to staff..." This place has clearly got a culture that will not change.
Nothing can bring back that moment for me and my friends were really gutted that I was treated like that. We ended up getting a cab home to Surrey and...

Read moreWARNING! Please read! I'm a Londoner and a Google Maps guide. I've never been insulted in London until now. This place is a warning. Don't go there.
To have fresh air I went outside of the pub 5-6times in 4 hours..inside was crowded and hot..
I wanted to go out. The guy who waits in the exit door had a timer and says you can't go out. I said are you serious?.. I wait for 5 minutes, the time is up and he doesn't open the door. When I go out again, he says that I can't drink standing up because I go out with a drink and brings me a chair. I say okay, I sit down, I don't do otherwise, but he treats me rudely with a sour face. I want to leave, he says you can't leave this door anymore. When I leave with a glass of water in my hand, he closes the door in my face. I say it's not alcohol, it's the water in my hand. Despite that, he doesn't let me out, I leave the water inside and he still doesn't open the door. Why do I keep going out because it's hot as hell inside! Last time I left and I was chatting with my friends in the front garden and I was neither smoking nor having alcohol in my hand, I took a bite from the cookie I found in my pocket and he came and grabbed me by the arm and told me to leave this place. He called the other officers and told them to take these off. Here's what I'm gonna tell you: You can't make up rules out of your arse. You are responsible for providing security, it is not your duty to make life miserable for the customers coming to the bar. You may have personal problems, you may have a complex, but if you are a professional employee, you shut up and only provide security. That pub is a kingdom, obviously. Justice, democracy, equality, nothing. The guys waiting at the gate have created their own kingdom. They get their satisfaction by tormenting people. Look, I wasn't even drunk. I strongly condemn this.
That staff is rude.. He made up rules.. Who does he think he is? He's the guy who waits in the gate.
Don't go. It's the worst pub I've ever been in. You need to fire him. I will show...
