I’ve been meaning to go to this place since moving to London. It’s a great place for a date because 1. It’s dark (fab if all your makeup has rubbed off at work) and 2. It’s in an old public toilet which is an easy ice breaker if you’ve got Tinder awkwardly wrong...again... Service was great towards the beginning. I mean TBH I thought it was good overall, but my snobby wine buff friends seemed miffed that they weren’t paid so much attention at the end of the evening. Ahh when you have good wine and cheese, what more do you need?! ***alcohol free people*** they do offer to make mocktails but don’t. It was just like drinking pineapple juice with a garnish. BUT they did immediately notice and offer to replace it. I went for a beer - zero will power over here! Booths are a bit cramped but I love the bar tables with the double tier for drinks and food, such a good idea

The food was good and deceptively filling for small plates. Our server was wonderful. Great, friendly energy, but she was all alone on the floor - and she had to make cocktails - so the service was a little slow. The atmosphere is the key to this place for me. Small yet wonderfully well used. I love subterranean venues, and this one had glass and cement grids on parts of the ceiling, and the shadows danced as people walked by. It feels like a speakeasy or special bomb-shelter from the 1920s, 1930s or 1940s, especially with jazzy versions of songs playing in the style of those eras. This would make a great visit during the Christmas period, I think. I will say, though, it's a touch on the expensive side, but still a great visit.

Went for a relaxing afternoon as a group of four and loved the selection of wines and plates. The server was attentive and kind, giving us a wine recommendation that was fantastic and even offering to mix up a NA soda for someone in our group who didn’t drink. We ordered the burrata with pesto and squash and loved it! We also enjoyed the baked Camembert and the cheese board. It was all great for the four of us to share! The unique history of the space itself is worth a visit, but I’ll come back for the amazing food and extensive selection of great wines.

This rating is based on the service that we received on and after WC's Valentines' Day 2018 special. We booked in for the night and paid a £25 deposit. Our decision to go to WC was based on the Instagram post which stated "For £25 you'll be able to enjoy..a complimentary glass of fizz, as well as an assortment of European delicacies and fresh figs" - have a look, it's still up there.

After being seated on the night, we waited 15 minutes without any kind of service, then followed up on our complimentary goods. We received our 2 small figs and glasses of champagne, and when asking the manager 'is this it??' (no sign of the advertised "european delicacies") we were told by 3 staff members (including manager) that the figs and champagne were complimentary, with the £25 being a refundable deposit to secure our table for the night. So we said no more about it.

The service during the night was really terrible. We had to actively search out waitstaff for every request, and waited a minimum of 45 minutes before getting any food that we ordered. At the end of the evening we paid the bill and left, later realising that the £25 deposit hadn't been refunded to us, but instead offset the 2 figs and 2 glasses of champagne that had been added on to our bill to the value of £25.

After 2 emails to their email address with no response, I eventually called and spoke to the manager yesterday (27/2) who said explicitly that they would refund the £25.

This evening (28/2) I went in to WC and spoke to a different manager, who refused to refund the money as apparently it wasn't a refundable deposit, but the cost of the champagne and figs. I showed him the Instagram advertisement that was the basis for my booking, only to be told that the booking confirmation email that I received after paying my deposit said we would only receive champagne and figs, and that it wasn't his fault that the Instagram wording was misleading. After arguing on this further, he made it clear that the £25 wasn't being refunded.

So here I am, feeling the need to write this review. Yes it was only £25 - but this is a complete rip off based on what we received for our money - throw in the elusive "European delicacies" and it might have been worth it.

Yes, I probably would have let it go if the situation was handled with more respect, or if I wasn't told four times that I would receive a £25 refund, but unfortunately based on the terrible customer service that I received this evening in trying to resolve this issue, I won't be returning and will encourage others to go elsewhere.

Shame as I bloody love...

After an evening out, we decided to swing by WC for a drink before heading home - the time was around midnight. Unaware that the bar normally closes at 12.30, we entered, were welcomed and seated as per normal, and ordered a carafe of wine and beer. 10 minutes after our drinks arrived, the staff came over to let us know the bar was closing and we had 20 minutes to leave. Feeling slightly surprised, I pointed out to the wait staff that we had literally just received our drinks, and this was insufficient time to allow us to properly enjoy our drinks. As I personally had ordered a carafe of wine, it essentially meant downing 2 glasses of rather expensive glasses of wine in 20 minutes.

The wait staff called over the manager, who essentially informed us that she felt they did nothing wrong and that we still had 20 minutes to finish our drinks (that we received minutes ago). Shocked, I told her this was unacceptable and requested a partial refund equivalent to the second glass of wine (half of the carafe price), which she refused, once again citing that they have done nothing wrong.

Before leaving, I stopped by the manager's desk, and let her know of my disappointment, as a long term loyal customer this was the first time the experience has been utterly beyond disappointment. The partial refund I requested was a small amount (15£) compared to the business that I personally have provided during multiple visits, as well as from friends, family and others that I have brought and introduced to the establishment. She told me with a flat face she understood and that she was sorry to lose my business.

Whilst I completely respect an establishment's opening times and that staff need to abide by rules, the manager's handling of this particular incident was disappointing and communication would have been helpful.

The staff when we arrived at the bar never warned us that the bar was about to close. When we were deciding between ordering a glass or a carafe (which was double the price), the wait staff also did not inform us that we would only have a short time to enjoy our drinks.

Sadly that is and was the last time we will...

My mum and I were here last night. We visited when it originally first opened and I have been twice before just for drinks with friends. It is very dimly lit at night so mum struggled to read the menu. However the whole ambience is cool and slick. Couple of pointers though.. the WC house white is not white but rose and has a very distinctive taste.. so we should have been offered to try it first. This then bumped up the total bill cost as I then had to drink hers as well as mine while she went to for the next white wine on the menu which of course was priced higher than the house. We ordered the charcuterie platter and meatballs. The 'balls were divine but when the platter came, it was the cheese and meat platter which was listed at £17.50 as opposed to the £15 meat only. Now we did eat this - and thoroughly enjoyed it, but the point being they still got the order wrong. There is also not enough bread to go with the platter, so we had to order more and of course, there was a supplementary charge for this. Overall the service was slow and it was hard to catch the attention of the two floor staff members, who seemed to be more interested in looking inwards towards the bar and chatting to each other, then observing the very small space they actually are tasked with manning. My mum and I could have eaten in Carmen, or the tapas place in Venn street if we wanted to... There is a lot of competition in the immediate area so I am afraid we will not be dining her again for awhile. It's all in the name which just did not deliver on this occasion. P.s I miss the chicken skin snacks they had when they...
