This is a long review, so apologies.
This could be a good Pub. Just poorly run in my experience and for a narrow demographic.
The selection of cold bottled beer is extremely poor. Just bottled larger and Cider. The Duke of York is 4 minutes south (Although it now closes on a Sunday) and The Trinity 3 minutes north have a better selection, dark and wheat beer in the fridge etc and outdoor seating. If you like a wider beer selection and want a reasonably enjoyable experience go there.
A selection of two cold bottled lagers is poor for a modern pub. I was informed, the pubs supplier could not supply any further choice as the pub had not been opened long enough . I was not convinced.
Furthermore, if you don’t like the live music that dominates the tight space, it is a pretty depressing experience. Also the yellow / orange light bulbs make it very dull inside.
I just feel from local knowledge there are probably better pubs with a better choice a short distance away. The Trinity has bifold windows, so quite pleasant on a summers day if you looking for a summer’s drink. Other pubs have tables outside. There are a number of pubs with friendlier staff nearby.
The pub did get Wheat beer in for about a week. I tried again one Sunday as they said on the website it was open to 11.00. At 22.15 I was told they were no longer serving drinks and didn’t have Wheat beer. The closing time advertised is not the time they close. No last orders and no warning.
Definitely, look at the Duke of York and / or the Trinity or pubs closer to London Bridge. There are other pubs that generally close at normal hours. Trust me I am a Borough / Southwark local. If you are younger than me and not particularly worried about service use the Ship. Otherwise use another pub!
This pub is for the younger drinker and the popular with the student halls next door. Not really for the local to the area or someone slightly older. I genuinely hope the pub improves; the area could do with another decent pub. Although popular with the student demographic , there are other pubs nearby with managers who target a wider demographic with the...
Read moreUsually quite a decent pub but on Euro 2024 finals day they let it get dangerously overcrowded in here. It was completely wedged and there was no monitoring of how many people were in the pub. It was detrimental to business as it was impossible to get to the bar so only managed to have a couple of initial drinks. As people couldn’t get to the toilets they were also urinating in the street.
Ahead of it getting so busy I ordered a pint and the shish taouk. The girl behind the bar was quite rude in taking my order as I didn’t have my table number. Even though it wasn’t as busy as for the game it was still to the point of being too busy to easily get to my table and a ten minute wait to get served. She said she couldn’t take a food order without a table number and was really rude about it. I know it was an error on my part but any well versed member of staff would realise the difficulties to get to the bar and know roughly what tables were where or make a note as to where I say.
As for the food the portion was minuscule and the chicken overcooked. At £15.50 it was a complete waste of money. It came with pots of yoghurt and chilli sauce which barely had anything in them. You’d also expect some bread thrown in but no such luck. Avoid the food here and try somewhere else.
I’ve been here several times before and on a usual day it’s a good pub. However the poor food and rude staff will make me think...
Read moreWe chose the Ship to visit on our way back to our car from the imperial war museum after researching menus offered in the area. We have one fussy eater kid and the advertised menu offered variety for all, along with a working online booking system unlike some other places around. After a busy day in London we arrived with tired hungry kids, staff were friendly and COVID restrictions and preparation appeared to be in place. The menu however was restricted to two items - fish and chips or burger and chips, with no kids menu at all. Fortunately our fussy little un was ok for what was on offer. If we were pre-warned on our confirmation or on the pubs website prior to the limited menu we would have changed our plans accordingly.
Our order took approximately 45 minutes from order to arrive which seems excessive in light of the limited menu and it wasn’t overly busy either. Although all the staff were friendly there was a lack of PPE being worn by them when serving food which further let down our experience further.
If there was a proper menu and the staff had appropriate PPE we would have had such a more...
