The Snooty Fox — Restaurant in London

Had a relatively unpleasant experience with one of the bar staff that means I probably wouldn't come back.

A group of friends and I had been to a sake tasting that evening at the pub and then decided to order yardsale pizza afterwards. A member of staff came over about 15 minutes after we had started eating and said "Actually yardsale is only on Sundays, you can't order it here any other day. We have our own restaurant. " in a very passive aggressive tone. We apologised and said we didn't realise (I had previously had yardsale here before and it's listed on their website as a location they deliver to under pubs/venues so I, I guess naively, assumed it was fine any day of the week. We then asked "what would you like us to do, we can leave if you prefer?" to which she replied "well, I'll have to speak to the manager" and stormed off but never came back to us.

In hindsight, I can see how it maybe should have been obvious to us that we shouldn't have ordered pizza in when they had a restaurant open that evening. At the time, having had a couple of drinks, it wasn't obvious to us and so we felt embarrassed when it was pointed out that we'd made this faux pas and then doubly bad when we were spoken to so unpleasantly. I'm not sure what the intention was other than to make us feel bad given that we asked what we should do (in a genuine sense of "how can we right this issue") and we were just met with more passive aggressiveness and being ignored.

Not sure if the normal chef was off as can't believe they are getting 5 star reviews serving food like we had yesterday. A group of us came for the Christmas menu and unfortunately were very disappointed. The presentation was particularly bad, starter was virtually inedible burnt toast (the burnt side was initially hidden which was a nice surprise), pate served like a lump of unappetising ice-cream (with an ice-cream scoop!) and just not very nice flavour - I'd be embarrassed to serve it to non paying guests at home, main was one slab of beef which was overcooked, tough and fatty slapped on top of 2 potatoes and 1 large carrot and that was it, no green veg, no trimmings - a very poor version of a Sunday roast! For the Christmas special set menu at £40 for 3 courses I was expecting some extra bits, we didn't even get a Yorkshire pud like you'd expect on a normal beef roast! Dessert was a brownie, which was ok but again presentation left a lot to be desired, swimming around a plate with melting ice cream and a depressing macaron. You just can't really get away with substandard fare like this in North London in 2024. Staff were nice but could only do do much with the poor food and plating!

The private room upstairs is tired and needs a paint and a good clean, felt grubby. Ladies toilets were swamped with water and felt like they needed a refurb 20 years ago! 🚇Canonbury 🍺 £6.00 Pilsner Urquell ❤️ One of Islington’s favourites. . The Snooty Fox is located kinda sandwiched between Highbury and Newington Green. Canonbury Overground is just down the road and Highbury & Islington tube is a ten minute walk away. . This pub has a curved facade that links both sides of Grosvenor Avenue. This is a good size one bar pub which has some traditional and modern features. There are beautiful green tiles around the servery and a brass fireplace on the far wall. The walls are adorned with music legends including Tina Turner and John Lennon. Sticking with the music theme, there is a vinyl jukebox that spins old 45’s. . This independent pub has an excellent choice of beers including five rotating cask options. I had a Pilsner Urquell which was a lovely drop and average price. The food menu has a good mix of dishes including rotisserie chicken, pub classics and roasts on a Sunday. . The atmosphere was relaxing on this Saturday lunchtime and the pub was gradually filling up. I was served by a very personable lady who seemed to be the landlady, she was busy welcoming in punters and tending to their orders and running food. The clientele was a mix of young and old, drinkers and diners. . The @snootyfoxlondon is passionate about its beer and food and was recently recognised by CAMRA as North London pub of the year.
