🚇 Canonbury 🍺 £5.40 Becks Vier ❤️ A fantastic movie themed N1 boozer. . The Alma is located in Newington Green which is halfway between Highbury and Dalston. The nearest station is Canonbury which is a gentle five minute walk away. . The Alma was built mid 19th century along with the Victorian terrace it nestles in to. The exterior of the pub is simple but elegant, the paint is a deep blue and the orange awnings add a splash of colour. Inside, the decor here is a film buff’s dream. Around the walls are posters, neon signs and even life size models from the most famous films ever to grace the silver screen. You will find yourself gazing around the pub trying to name the films and actors. The bar area is in a “U” shape with lots of comfy low level seating including a couple of cinema seats. There is a large TV screen if you fancy catching a live premiere league game. . The beer line up has a bit of something for everyone but no cask options. I had a pint of Becks Vier which you don’t see too often, my pint was excellent and reasonably priced. The food menu is a mix of British classics and tasty pizza’s. On my first visit here, my Daughter and I took advantage of the 241 deal and we really enjoyed the food. If you visit on a Sunday then sumptuous roasts are the order of the day. The service was good, the lady who served me was lovely. . The atmosphere was relaxed and chilled on Saturday lunchtime with a few locals in attendance. While I was here I watched a bit of Leicester v Palace game along with a few others. This pub has lots going on to keep you entertained, throughout the month are live band’s nights, DJ sets and jam sessions, check out their Insta for updates. . @thealma_n1 is one of those pubs that you immediately feel welcome and at home in. The decor here is brilliant and creates an atmosphere of familiarity and intrigue. The beer and food are bang on and the entertainment will give you something to talk about the next day. This is a great pub for any occasion and a must visit, I’ll be back! 😎 . ℹ️ Info correct on...
Read moreReally disappointed with my experience tonight at The Alma. Came here tonight with my girlfriend looking forward to a one last night out before lockdown starts tomorrow, and there was one issues after another to the point we walked out. We arrived and our table had mistakingly been given to someone else, which left us having to wait to be seated whilst they sorted it out. Secondly, my girlfriend ordered a half pint of Guinness and a full pint was bought out 20 minutes later. Thirdly, when the food came, no cutlery was provided and only when I got up from my seat and went and requested cutlery did they provide some (this was after 10 minutes of receiving the food). Fourthly, we had been trying to flag down the waiter (as well as many others near us) for 30 + minutes, whereby he made eye contact with us and said 2 minutes but then still didn't approach us. Finally, he arrived at our table and took our order (1 neckoil + one house wine), we waited for about 15 minutes and nothing... and to our surprise (not) he then came back to us and wanted to reconfirm what we had ordered (even though he wrote it down). He then went away and then a further 5+ minutes passed for which he mentioned that the neckoil had run out and if I wanted a gamma ray (to which i said yes). He then went away and another 10 minutes later his colleague came and told me that the gamma ray had run out too. At this point we had enough, lack of service, lack of communication clearly between staff and frankly just very average food, we left and went to the off license next door. We appreciate it's a hard time right now and it's important to ensure that profits are high, but if the staff are going to neglect the customers, then I'm sure this isn't the principal behind what the pub stands for! More than happy to discuss this with someone if it's read by any of the staff. Thank you and...
Read moreSad to say because I used to like this pub but on my last two visits I have had to leave without even being served because I have been completely ignored by the staff. The first time I had my Husky puppy with me and just assumed that they no longer allowed dogs but thought that perhaps no one had the heart to tell me. However, on the second occasion I was dogless but witnessed 4 staff on duty one of whom was a blonde lady who stood right in front of me and filled a straw dispenser with about 200 straws and at no point did she make eye contact with me, then when she had finished she just wandered away. A middle aged man who I took to be the manager, served someone next to me then walked away, only to return and serve someone new from the same position he'd just served from previously, A few feet away stood a dark haired woman who was trying to appear inconspicuous as a member of staff and hanging back- moving one glass at a time into a new position two inches from it's previous position, and the fourth member of staff was making himself busy at the other end of the bar where everyone had already been served. I'm really disappointed by the lack of customer service here and doubt I will be returning anytime soon. It's a pity because I was looking forward to a Lagunitas IPA and something from their food menu. Never mind- I went up the road to "The Cellars" and got served straight away without being made to...
