Such a disappointment! Perhaps the team are under pressure getting the restaurant established, but we found the service was poor: no one offered to take my coat, not a single smile from any team member the whole meal, difficult to reach anyone at the best of times despite quite a few empty tables nearby.
While the restaurant was eagerly photographing food at the pass, we found that the taste didn’t live up to the images. My chosen starter (octopus) was sold out, so I opted for the asparagus and black truffle starter (£42), which was drowned in a rich cheese sauce, and was far too heavy for me. The second starter, tuna tartar lacked flavour and seemed to just consist of some tuna chopped into cubes, sprinkled with some sesame seeds. We had to ask multiple times for bread (charged £4 for), and for refills of our empty drinks during the meal. My fish main course swam in oil, more akin to a dodgy fish and chips than a £38 Chilean sea bass (I’d be surprised if anyone who orders grilled fish wants something dripping in fat).
The cherry on the top was leaving the restaurant smelling of food, as the back tables are right next to the open kitchen. We would advise saving yourself £100+ per head (without drinks) for somewhere else. Sadly, at the moment this feels like a big downgrade (plus price hike) from the much-loved 202 that used to be here.
Finally, one of the most recent 5 star reviews appears to have been left by a member of the restaurant’s team, which feels a bit like “marking your...
Read moreWe visited for dinner on a Saturday. It’s a medium sized venue with a dark and woody theme and a fully exposed kitchen. Me and my wife were seated at a table with plenty of space, which is a rarity in London!
We ordered the bread, warm octopus salad and calamari to start, followed by the sirloin steak and truffle pasta for mains, served with a side of spinach. Note that a large number of items (including a variety of steaks and seafood) are off menu and only listed on the specials board. We finished with the hazelnut mousse and cheesecake. The food ranged from decent to excellent depending on the dish. The calamari, spinach and desserts were less exciting, I’d say not bad but not great. In contrast the truffle pasta was excellent but best of all was the steak. This was a quality piece of meat cooked to perfection!
Our primary server was very friendly and quite an entertaining character as well. The food was delivered at a speedy pace which is our preference. The bill for the 2 of us came to £303 of which £80 was spent on drinks. No doubt pricey, but after having visited sister restaurants Wild Tavern and Belvedere, I knew what to expect. I would actually draw a similar conclusion for all 3 restaurants - the food is generally very good, in particular the steaks at all 3 really stood out, while service was excellent. The prices are a bit excessive, but clearly this hasn’t deterred me from returning, and I look forward to more visits in future! Belvedere would be my top pick of the...
Read moreYesterday’s experience at the restaurant was unfortunately disappointing. I had been looking forward to visiting after hearing so many positive things about both the food and service. We were a group of five, with friends visiting from Belgium, and while the food itself did not disappoint in particular, the prawn tartare and ox cheek pasta were absolutely delicious. The service fell far short of expectations and ultimately spoiled the evening. To highlight a few issues: water was never topped up unless we waved and asked, empty glasses were left on the table all night (on one occasion the waiter removed only a single glass and walked away without a word), and our mains were left sitting on the pass because we hadn’t been given cutlery. The manager had to step in to resolve this. There were no checkbacks on starters, and throughout the evening the waiter seemed disengaged and uninterested. At one point I even saw him throw something near the bar till and have what appeared to be a heated discussion with a manager. His lack of presence and professionalism really detracted from what should have been a memorable evening. To add to the disappointment, when we left, the host didn’t even say goodbye. Small touches like this make a big difference, and their absence was noticeable. Overall, while the food was excellent, the service was nowhere near the standard I had been...
