Ezra & Gil — Restaurant in Manchester

This was by far one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had, and I honestly wish I could give zero stars. The restaurant was almost empty when we arrived, so we naturally expected a quick and pleasant breakfast. Instead, we were met with an unacceptable wait time — over 40 minutes — for something that should have taken a fraction of that time.

When we politely asked about our order, the response from the staff was nothing short of dismissive. One worker simply told us to “just wait” in a rude tone, and then proceeded to ignore us entirely as if our question was an inconvenience to them. Not once did anyone check on us, update us about our food, or offer any sort of apology for the delay.

The atmosphere was uncomfortable from the start. The staff didn’t greet us properly, didn’t make us feel welcome, and acted like serving customers was a chore. Considering the place was far from busy, there’s no excuse for such slow service or such unprofessional behavior. It’s clear that customer care is not a priority here.

What’s most disappointing is that breakfast is supposed to be a pleasant start to the day, and instead we left frustrated and hungry. Utterly disappointed by this place. We arrived for a Sunday morning breakfast, and sat down straight away. The menu's are fine for food, but lack any kind of drinks menu's. You choose what you want and go to the till yourself, so no real service, hence the 1 star for service. We usually get Orange juice with Breakfast, but they are charging £4 per glass, which I think is overpriced for a glass of orange. We ordered 2x full breakfasts, which were disappointing. Sausages that were overly firm (I understand that they were good quality, but the texture was off-putting - almost crumbly), the smallest espresso cup of beans I've ever had as part of a breakfast, and two halves of a tomato, that they had shown the grill for a second or two. The scrambled eggs were perfect for me, but not my partner, who felt they were too wet. The breakfast is visually very nice, but just didn't hit the spot. The coffee however, was fantastic. to the point where I actually bought a bag myself (more on that in a second). They don't roast the beans, but they are from a Manchester roastery, and tasted great! After I had decided to buy the beans - a 1kg bag (because the equivalent in 250g bags would have been DOUBLE the price! Doesn't make sense), I had to look on the website for the price, as their little pantry selection didn't bother to list the prices. I asked one of the employees to confirm the price, who confirmed that they were £24 per bag (250g is £12.50!!!). I collected a bag and went to pay, where I was told that I would get a free coffee with the purchase - great! the member of staff also brought over a card machine, as they knew that I was just purchasing the beans - at which point they then told me that they were now £26 and not £24. Maybe trying to recoup a little for the "Free" coffee. As I wanted them, I bought them anyway, but I certainly wouldn't go back to E&G. The food was just OK. the service was me serving myself, and the atmosphere was the usual Northern Quatre types. Not somewhere I'd usually go, but I'd heard that the breakfast was good. A nice dog-friendly brunch spot located in the Northern Quarter, between Piccadilly Gardens and Ancoats.

Ezra & Gil reflects the Manchester industrial heritage in the choice of décor, with bare-brick walls, steel columns and wood & leather furniture. There is plenty of seating space with high tables near the windows as well as tables for two, four and eight! It is very bright as there is a light source above every table. I visited the restaurant on a Wednesday afternoon and there were many unoccupied tables, however, I believe that it is very busy on weekends. Quiet music is always playing in the background, which does not distract people from their conversations. It is dog-friendly, so feel free to visit Ezra & Gil with your pawed friends.

The service was really good. I was welcomed at the entrance by a member of staff, who made sure that I know where everything is on my first visit. As I went there just for a coffee, I made my order at the counter, told the barista my table number and went to my table. My coffee and bake arrived five minutes later, which was alright because I was sitting in, but I am not sure if it will suit someone in need for a quick coffee takeaway.

The flat white I ordered was nice. Strong and creamy. For some reason I tasted some hints of wafers, in addition to a chocolaty flavour. Rose and Pistachio bake was great. You get an amazing combination of flavours with salty nuts and a soft taste of roses. The price is about an average for Manchester, but some cakes are on a pricier side.

Ezra & Gil offers a variety of espresso-based drinks and teas. The selection of food options is very good. You can get different salads, poke bowls, pasta dishes and toasties in addition to more than a dozen of brunch options, that are available until 5 PM. A small part of the shop is also dedicated for fresh produce, some pantry fillers and merchandise.

To summarise, I think that Ezra & Gil is a great NQ restaurant, ideal if you want to have a brunch, or just some food with you coffee. It can be a good working/studying space. And do not forget to invite your "extended family" with you, as they are...
