It’s a shame that I feel like I need to leave this review because I usually love deaf institute. I was ready to give feedback on my food at the table but the waiting staff just took our plates without asking any questions so I didn’t have a chance.
As a vegan I love deaf institute, and me and my fiance like to eat here quite a lot.
Today we finally decided to try the vegan Sunday roast, we chose deaf over all of the other places in Manchester offering a vegan Sunday roast.
Where to start........ The seitan strips were the most tough I’ve ever eaten, as a vegan chef myself I’ve made my fair share of seitan and it’s only ever this tough it’s it’s been severely over cooked or left out for hours.
The broccoli was literally just steamed/blanched broccoli which was also over cooked, it was like slop. The most basic broccoli possible with no flavour whatsoever.
The gravy.... (although I didn’t get much at all) was so so bland, tasted like nothing. Added nothing to the meal apart from making the broccoli even more sloppy and the carrot mash sloppy.
The carrot mash had nice flavour but was way to runny and sloppy.
The roast potatoes were ok but could tell they had been either hot held or just left out all day, which is fine but the seemed to have dried out a lot.
On top of this, there wasn’t that much of it either. It was definitely a substantial size meal but for a £10 roast I just felt like it didn’t look all that great.
This is a shame as we’ve enjoyed many nice meals here. It seems like they can pull off the vegan junk food but are lacking when it comes to putting a thought out meal together.
It feels mean giving 1 star but the service didn’t even pull it back on this occasion. I said “when someone comes to ask us how the food is I’ll tell them” but no one asked. Then when the plates were cleared I said I’d give feedback but we weren’t asked how the old was or if everything was ok. I heard someone in the kitchen snapping at FOH staff aswell so maybe someone was having a bad day but this also meant that we had a bad day.
Feel reluctant to return as the food is what we...
Read moreI booked table for one for 8pm but called about 5pm and asked if they could move my table reservation about an hour earlier. They considered!
The location was precise in Google Maps but for someone who's a first-timer in Manchester, the place is not obvious from outside. I found my way in, anyway! It's got a cool-mysterious vibe from outside. The aura made me feel intimidated to go inside, initially. Which is good!!
I stated in the booking to put me on a comfortable seat in the room. They put me on a platform. Just a bit awkward for someone going out alone. Hahaha! I found it funny...not bad!
I love that they have the vegan choices for food and beer! I ordered the Saitan Hotdog with vegan bacon crisps. I didnt think it was vegan! I've only been vegetarian for 5 months so I know what to expect from the taste of vegan-modified food. And yes! Ut was delicious! I just find it a bit odd that there were pasta bits in the Hotdog.
The waiter was, in his own ways, quite friendly as he frequently asked me how I was and how's the food and if I need anything else (maybe because I was by myself). I was eating proper dinner and having beer while everyone else in the room were in a pub-mode.
I was planning to watch live music after dinner but I felt so full after the meal.
There were university-looking people and young adults in the room and some coming & out of the main door.
To sum up, gastronomically, as a vegetarian, food is a must-try. For beer & chat with mates, this is a good place to go as it is cozy & has a "we-are-family-so-be-comfortable" vibe. There's also the club & live music so this place will...

Lovely venue, over 3 floors downstairs bar, centre upstairs bar and eating area serving vegan food and upstairs again for concert space and bar.
Easy to find venue central location. Welcoming bar staff who explains the vegan menu and helpful when connecting to their WiFi and took my photo when I asked cos I wanted to show a friend what I was wearing.
Clean and bright though out, decor is goth-retro.
Food and drink served quickly and reasonably priced and all tastes good. Here to see When Rivers Meet, with Troy Redfern in support, first time for both venue and artists.
Arrived early 5 pm have a little bite to eat, could hear the band rehearsal coming from the upstairs concert hall,
Went for a walk in sunshine around All Saint's park across the road.
Everyone has arrived early for the gig.
Troy Redfern was first on stage. He is fantastic, just call him "the guitar man" because he is, the way he plays his many guitars and uses his pedals like another instrument was mind blowing, I could have listened to him all night.
Next, the band themselves,
When Rivers Meet.
They are a fantastic, husband and wife duo Grace and Arran Bond but now they have the one and only, Roger Inniss on Bass and James Fox on Drums and piano. Roger and James both showed us how well they play when they jammed together in the set, then watched them both vibing when Grace and Arran did a spellbinding duet. Such an excellent night. It was over too soon, can not wait to see them again. Must comment on the sound system for the venue, it is really good, loud but clear...
