For a Marriott property, this hotel is disappointing.
Rooms are well presented, but lack the amenities you’d expect for the price. They’re small things, but they negatively impact the overall guest experience. For example, complimentary water is not provided in any room, including suites. Even the gym doesn’t have a water facility. In-room tea & coffee facilities have no biscuits or snacks and bathrooms have no amenity kits or glasses. Marriott hotels are classified in the ‘Premium’ category, but the obvious penny-pinching makes this Marriott feel rather basic.
Also, Marriott Bonvoy Elite Status recognition is extremely poor, with no welcome gift provided and room-upgrades typically being ‘to a higher floor’. Also don’t get excited if you get a room upgrade to an Executive room with M Club lounge access, this hotel does not give you lounge access (unless you book it) - your Executive room “upgrade” means you get a Nespresso machine on a higher floor.
By comparison, I stayed at the nearby Marriott hotel, The Reach at Piccadilly, which is usually cheaper, and was provided with complimentary in-room still and sparkling waters, sodas, fresh milk, biscuits and snacks, bathroom amenity kits and more. Plus Marriott Bonvoy Elite Status recognition was excellent, with a welcome gift and a genuine room upgrade provided. There’s really no comparison, The Reach feels like a luxury hotel, whereas this Marriott feels basic.
It’s worth noting that the location is the least ideal of any major hotel chain in Manchester. Yes it’s close-ish to Piccadilly station, but it’s a long walk into town and there are no bars or restaurants nearby. Most other hotels are much better located.
Breakfast is ok, but overall, not of a high standard. The omelettes cooked to order are the highlight.
On a positive, staff are welcoming, although some of the reception staff require additional training, particularly with regards to Marriott Bonvoy member recognition.
During my three night stay, housekeeping failed to clean my room any of the days without any explanation. I had to complain to hotel reception to get fresh towels and only after multiple complaints did my room finally get cleaned. It was completely unacceptable and all they could do was say “sorry”.
Finally, I need to emphasise that the lack of water provision really is an embarrassment to this property. On multiple occasions I witnessed guests asking for water at reception or at the hotel bar. Bar staff confirmed they’re constantly asked to fill water bottles or provide glasses of water. I witnessed reception staff selling bottles of water to elderly customers wanting it for their room, it felt completely wrong. This really tells you everything you need to know about this hotel.
In summary, this Marriott hotel has the potential to be a five star property, but it’s clear the management can’t see, or are unwilling to make, the changes required to do so. Management are clearly putting profits before guest exprenience.
Oooh where to start.... First, it is a great location. Just a block away from Piccadilly railway station. It's a 3 minute walk, so for travelers it's super convenient. It also feels safe. But that's about all is good about this particular Marriott. The staff, although friendly, is not particularly helpful. The check in process took forever and the young man checking me in didn't seem to particularly know what he was doing. The room I have originally reserved had in pictures much bigger bathroom with separate shower and soaking tub area. I was told I was getting an upgrade due to my Bonvoy status, I think I got a downgrade. No tub, small bathroom and the room looked identical. The cleanliness of the room was ok, but it could be more detailed. The toiletries on the wall in the shower were clearly not checked on by housekeeping as I was out of shampoo. I called in to get it delivered to my room along with some extra towels (which in itself took multiple attempts as nobody was picking up the phone), and after an hour and a half of waiting and nobody showing up i finally flagged a housekeeping person down the hallway on my floor to get what I wanted. The M Club (lounge for the Bonvoy Elites) is a joke in itself. If you get it as a perk of your status...fine, it's free, but if you chose to book a room with lounge access, it's a colossal waste of money. The breakfast food there is passable, but over all a very slim selection and quantity too. It's a shame compared to any other Marriott around the world, including US locations that are known for being cheap and penny pinching. Now the happy hour snacks are not even edible. Awful presentation with half empty serving plates, dried out food devoured of any flavor and a menu of "for purchase options" which defeats the purpose of complimentary lounge in a first place. There's few alcoholic options during that happy hour that are self served, but even soft drinks are from a dispenser machine only, no bottled or canned options to take it to your room. Also, weird elevator set up the lounge is on a first floor, if your room is on a higher floor, you actually have to take elevator down to the ground floor in order to go up again. No option to just go up....who design that and why??? Over all an OK property, but just OK. I think it is below Marriott standards in terms of offerings and service. And the overwhelming feeling is that nobody really cares, they are there to make money, and the hospitality aspect is kinda put away in the deep closet on the back of the...
Read moreJust returned from a 2 day stay for business purposes it was at a slightly higher cost for a room of this type in the area, but where I needed to be. Plus points - pleasant staff, clean, comfy bed, room recently updated with pleasant decor, love the flooring and available storage, and bathroom design. Good to have both USB and type C connectors in the room. I had no issues with noise despite my room looking out towards the railway lines. Good choice at breakfast. Negative points - room provided not suitable for business use. I needed and booked a room advertised as having a work space. I was provided with a chair but no table (as shown in all photographs of this room type). I raised this with reception and asked if a table could be provided but this was not possible. What was annoying is that I actually saw tables of the type that should have been in my room, unused in other rooms being used for the event I was attending. I have been left with pain in my upper back and shoulders from trying to work sat on the bed (reception were told this). I actually ended up sitting on the floor using the single chair as a makeshift desk. I just wanted a quiet space to work in the late afternoon/evening to prepare for the event I was there for. For First morning attempted to take a shower but the temperature adjuster just fell off in my hand, I took a bath and reported this to reception on my way to breakfast, who indicated this would be reported to maintenance. This was not repaired prior to my departure the following day. Fortunately the good weather meant I was content to take a cool shower. The bacon at breakfast was rock hard, and the hotel should reconsider the tea types offered. I am a regular tea drinker and the breakfast tea was not a pleasant blend and despite the name did not brew well, I ended up using 2 bags, to get a reasonable strength, but there was a bitter taste, the Twinnings option in the room was far better (I actually took a teabag from my room to breakfast on the second day). So rooms provided do not have the amenities advertised and maintenance issues are not addressed. It would also have been nice to have biscuits/hot chocolate and a shower cap (especially when you can't access hot water in the shower!) , which are options offered in most 4...
