My partner and I visited the Anne of Cleves a few months back while stopping overnight in Melton Mowbry. I'll save you the suspense by telling you this - it was hands down, the best steak meal either of us had ever had.
Every single item on the dish was of noticably high quality, from the succulent tomatoes to the plump, juicy steak; every single item on the dish was cooked to perfection, including the steak that was exactly how we had ordered and bursting with flavour; and every single item on the dish was copious in quantity as well as quality, not cutting corners in any respect. It was the first time in a long time that I felt I had got a meal worthy of the price and it raised the bar.
We simply don't know what to do with ourselves since. My partner has said she's never going to order a steak dinner anywhere else because she knows it inevitably won't compare. I myself feel a similar sense of trepidation, knowing I will be in for disappointment no matter where I go. The standard is generally so low these days when eating out that to find somewhere offering a quality meal way above and beyond our expectations, well, it simply blew our socks off.
Simply sensational. Keep up the amazing work. Keep sourcing better than average products. Keep cooking the food with passion. Keep providing great table service and making the customer feel like you care. 11/10. We're sad we don't live closer and cannot visit again any time soon. Chef's...
Read moreWe were visiting Melton Mowbray for the day and decided to have a meal and spend our money locally. From outside the building looks every bit the part of an historical town. Luckily they are dog friendly. Our order comprised of French onion soup starter, fish and chips and gammon with 2 fried eggs handcut chips. The soup arrived and I can only describe it as onion gravy with a bit of cheese sprinkled on top. When our mains arrived my partner's gammon meal looked OK. When it came to my fish and chips the meal went dramatically down hill. When I went to open the fish, oil oozed out of the batter. Pressing the fish all the way along, oil continued to flood out. The batter wasn't crisp, it was spongy. I mentioned it to a member of staff who then spoke to someone senior. She asked if there was anything else I would like to order. I ordered the chicken cordon bleu. I then proceeded to sit and watch my partner eat his meal. By the time my replacement meal arrived, my partner had finished his, so ineffect we ate separately. My meal was just about edible really, nothing to write home about except the prices charged. I was told that the chef said "the fish only came in this morning (frozen) and probably hadn't defrosted thoroughly, so there was probably moisture in it and will be better the next day" Really??? Although the staff were apologetic and handled it rather well, we don't feel it right to recommend this restaurant after...
Read moreLovely looking from the outside but a bit tired inside. Not a great ambience.
Food menu was classic pub grub. We had fish and chips and steak & ale pie with mash and veg and a chicken salad. Meals were delivered 30 minutes after ordering. Food was OK though pie crust was burnt and the avocado in the chicken salad was brown... neither meal should have left the kitchen really.
But what really struck us was what happened with customers on an adjacent table. After we had ordered they said to us that they had been waiting to order desserts and couldn't understand why we had been served and they had been ignored. They said they had been waiting 30 minutes. They finally went to the bar and complained. The manager personally came to take their order. Our food arrived and we had finished but still their desserts hadn't been served! The gentleman of the party once more went to the bar and complained again and they then left. I don't think they had any discount for the poor service.
Because of this, we decided that we would not order desserts and paid and left.
There are tough times coming. Pubs and restaurants cannot afford to treat...
