The Sunshine Café — Restaurant in Mid Sussex

I wouldn't give it one star but this is the ratings. Before the change of management and staff, the restaurant was an accommodating place willing to do as much for their customers to encourage repeat custom.

I have let them have the odd instances and putting down to inexperienced staff but I can no longer accept the blatant disregard for the people paying for their bills and keeping the restaurant going. Not only do the male members of staff talk down to female customers, I have been blatantly ignored more than once in a visit.

On 19th Dec 2016, my partner and I decided to pop on for a drink and something to eat. When we asked what on the menu was gluten free ( for we both have intolerance to it ) our waitress just shrugged and mumbled a don't know, instead of going and asking the cooks, to this my already annoyed partner suggested she actually go and ask to which she did and we got the rude answer of nothing.

Considering a simple salad has none in.. it's clear to see that there is NO effort to keep customers who have been repeat and polite in the past. My partner decided against any food and I am glad he did not, for I did not fancy another ambulance trip to A and E for Coeliac attack. In the past we were aware the chips were cooked separately but this may have changed. On the menu there is a meal with a butterfly chicken that's grilled. What actually turned up was not this.. but two bits of southern spiced coated fried chicken, chips and a sad looking " salad " as I turned to ask about it the staff had walked off, not unusual if it was busy but it was close to the end of day. The server was sitting with her phone out, and when I asked the male staff member behind the counter, I was spoken to like a piece of dog do on a shoe, I then stated that the meal was not what I ordered and that I had visited only the week before and had that exact meal. To which he could not argue the previous statement of that's how the meal always comes. We were offered the chicken it was meant to come with, and told it would be free and we could take it home as he " didn't want to throw it away " It was suggested that my partner eat it to save the waste. If someone had not ordered anything more than the tea, I'm guessing it's not because they wanted a free meal on the restaurant....

The plate was NOT removed and a new salad and chips were given with a fresh meal. Seeing as most of it was not edible for myself or my partner. And no sight of a replacement I attempted to single a few chips and lettuce out from what had been contaminated by gluten. A small plate with just the chicken was dumped in front of me and I was left to it. This so called " free meal" cost us £7.00 and two teas cost £2.00. I ate what I could and for this I suffered stomach pains and diarrhoea. In essence this company gave me a form of food poisoning, and did not care either way if this was going to happen. Was waiting half an hour for someone to come greet us. Had to get my own menus. The guy taking our 3 orders down nearly got it wrong and we had to repeat it several times. My food was both burnt and cold:so I sent it back, my fiancée's food was cold, the chips were horrible, the eggs were freezing. We had to wait 5minutes for cutlery, wasn't offered any sauces, wasn't offered a refill, had no check back. Then when voicing our reasons for not paying them, they tried to charge me for a meal I didn't eat, then they kicked us out and a member of staff shouted to a full cafe that we didn't have any money. We have money but didn't feel that we should pay for...

A very generous portion of food. Certainly more then if I went to a pub chain which serves food. Sunshine cafe situated in the shopping centre with a car park only minutes away. My only disappointment is that when I got to the till I was told that they were taking payments on card of £10 and over for no card charges . Mine was slightly below which they let me off on this occasion. Wouldn't it have been more helpful to have this notice on the door so that I had this information before venturing in?
