Having had a flier through the door for Samshburger we decided to go and give it a go.. Being fans of similar restaurants such as GBK we thought it was worth a try.
Upon arriving as Smashburger the manager was standing in the doorway talking to a customer, great to see the manager getting involved with customers and taking direct feedback not so great that it made getting into the resturaunt awkward as if we were in the way by trying to get in.
We were told (by the manager) how it works, take a menu and que up etc.. Perhaps wrongly we expected that we were queing to be shown to a table rather than to order and find a table ourselves - in my opinion this made us rush to decide on our order.
We then ordered our meals and I was shocked at the price, two burgers (medium) with fries and two drinks £32.50 i paid the lady behind the till with no fuss but my expectations had now been inflated, a firm believer of the phrase "you get what you pay for"
Moving on; we were told that upstairs is closed so please sit anywhere downstairs, well downstairs has fairly limited seating, we attempted two different tables that were to small for two people to sit at comfortably and be able to eat and enjoy the meal without feeling squeezed in. In the end we sat right by the door and were cold, from a customer perspective I feel that if there are seats upstairs away from the door I want them made available to me.
When our meals arrived both my partner and I were disappointed by the portion size of the sides for a start never the less we tucked in to our orders..
I had a bacon cheese burger, the burger looked good however there were some issues: There was far too much mustard sauce in the burger, so much so that I couldn't actually taste the burger or the ketchup that I added to try and calm the mustard down The fries were luke warm The bacon was tough and flavourless
My partner had a chicken burger with avocado and sweet potato fries. She was also disappointed by what arrived: The chicken was really thin more like a thick slice of chicken The chicken was tough/rubbery (over-cooked) Portion sizes of chips again were very small.
We carried on and ate our meals for two reasons, firstly we were both very hungry and it was late, secondly I was reluctant to waste £32.50 by leaving.
in summary I think that Smashburger have really made the effort and investment in their marketing, presentation and the site, however; this unfortunately is not reflected in the quality of the food. I left feeling that I would have enjoyed the taste of a £1 cheeseburger from McDonalds over the Smashberger.
I didn't complain or request a refund because I understand it is a new business and will have teething problems and should be given the benefit of the doubt, I also did not want to give this feedback directly to the staff as they were very good. So I have decided to list some points below that I feel would benefit Smashberger if they are reviewed.
Good points: Well presented Friendliness of staff Clean & tidy
Bad points: 1.Over priced compared to competitors for similar order & higher quality 2.No condiments given with sides (haystack onions - a little pot of dips would be nice) 3.Seating is too limited, squashed & uncomfortable Portion sizes need to be reviewed Poor quality chicken & Bacon Disappointing experience that doesn't reflect the marketing or vision The manager was "teaching" an employee how to use a mop directly behind us whilst eating this poses two issues for me: I don't want you mopping behind me whilst we eat and have conversation at the table Being a manager myself of a team of nearly 70 employees the way the manager was showing the employee how to use a mop was very condescending and had it been me I would have felt very belittled and insulted.
the management team need to eat at the competitors restaurants and fully understand what they are up against, attention to detail with things like a selection of dips with sides alongside good quality food will give the...
Read moreDisappointing visit really, very loud music being played by the resident dj which meant we couldn't engage in conversation with each other. Queue system is chaotic and very slow service, with younger members of staff shouting for help from senior members of staff on operating the till. For two burgers, two portion of chips and two refillable soft drinks it come to £25.25, which I thought was very expensive. The tables are very small and have sharp metal edges underneath, which together with the limited space of the restaurant makes for a claustrophobic eating experience. Some of the cutlery still has food stuffs and water stains on them, which is an easy issue to sort out when you have lots of staff. Overall the food was very tasty, but there were a few issues -
1). The onion rings on the Stilton stack burger were cold.
2). Seemed to be excess water on the salad stuffs, which made the burger bun soggy.
3). We both left feeling slightly hungry, portion sizes are quite small considering the prices.
4). The restaurants air conditioning makes it too cold to sit down and enjoy your food.
5). Although you probably get a better quality burger at Smash burger, we both agree that MacDonalds offer the same portion sizes at a quarter of the price quicker with a more relaxed and comfortable dining experience.
Obviously this being Smash burgers debut flagship store in the UK there are bound to be some teething problems, only time will tell if these iron out. At present we both feel that Smash burgers target customer is teenagers and for us to be attracted back they would need to make it a more relaxed and comfortable place to sit, eat and socialise. Lower prices...
Read moreWe placed an order through Deliveroo in December 21 and our food arrived cold. Could be said that was the fault of the delivery driver delaying delivery or getting a bit lost so ok not the end of the world. Decided to give them another shot and placed another delivery order for the whole family as a birthday treat (At the request of my son, who can not eat out in restaurants due to anxiety and physical disabilities, on his birthday). Order placed at just after 8pm for nearly £100 in total. 6 burgers with a few changes, no salad items in a couple and a couple of extras in others, 5 lots of chips and plenty of time for cooking and getting the food to the driver (through again a well know delivery company) to deliver to us at home. To my surprise the order was cancelled after 5 minutes after we had paid, so the app orders were still live with the reason 'they close at 10pm and couldn't fulfill the order before they close. I mean really, a reputable burger franchise can't cook 6 burgers and 5 portions of chips within an hour and 55 minutes. That left me trying to explain to my son on his birthday that he couldn't have the meal he wanted with his family and we would have to find an alternative. I could have cooked a full dinner from scratch in that time. I just can not believe they couldn't cook food to order in that time frame. No wonder the food we ordered in December came cold it takes them so long!!!! Safe to say one very sad son on his birthday later we will not be placing and order there again! Really really...
