I wouldn't recommend anybody buying food here. Tonight was the first time I'd been since the Chinese couple who used to run it retired, & what a big disappointment it was. My friend ordered a cheeseburger, I ordered cod & chips. Whilst we were waiting, whenever the lady serving behind the counter handled the hot food coming out of the fryers, she would lick her fingers when she thought nobody would notice. Me & my friend had no intention of eating the food after seeing this, but we did bring it home, what a wonderful surprise!! The burger my friend ordered was really dry, like it had been pre-cooked, seriously, I mean come on guys. Then there was my cod, which was also dry, covered in greasy batter, I picked it apart, & saw that it had freezer burn on it, absolutely disgusting. Read moreThis is the first time I have been to Gills since they left the old location on Chillingham Road.
What I found was a lovely, new, sparkling clean shop, with exactly the same unique taste that so many have come to know and love in the 25 or so years since they have been in Heaton.
The best thing about the new location is that you can now eat inside, so your meal stays warm and fresh and it saves messing on washing up at home.
The only thing that stops me giving 5 stars is that I would like to see plates, cutlery and salt & vinegar being given to those who do choose to sit in.
I know this is an extra expense and more time cleaning plates etc, but I think it would be a good investment and worth looking in to. I'm sure this will attract more custom.
Either way, I will be a regular with Gills once more....

Deceitful marketing flyers are posted through our letterbox so we decide to check in on Gills. 50% off Donner Kebabs and Pizzas, or so the flyer says if you have the flyer on you. We make an order of garlic bread, a pizza, and two donner kebabs, total on the phone comes up to £21.50 (Ripping your eyes out) and we head over with the flyer expecting the 50% off, only to be told "You have to come in to order it and get the discount", excuse me but where the Hell does it say it on the flyer that you have to come in? And no, "It says takeaway" isn't the right response there. Fix your marketting scandel and stop ripping off students just trying to pick up a meal. Disgusting quality chips too, soppy...
