Best coffee shop in Newcastle? I think it could be, and I do not say that lightly. Several months ago, I was on somewhat of a mission to find the best independent coffee shop in the area, and the fact that I’ve just said “mission” in relation to coffee tells you everything you need to know about how serious I take it. I make no apologies for that, I mean coffee is king, it deserves to be appreciated, right? At last a place that lives up to the reviews! This is epitome of a hidden gem. Actually, thanks to a nice new sign, it might not be so hidden anymore. The owner is an absolutely top bloke, really welcoming, friendly and passionate about his business, and rightfully so. The drink / food selection and service are all top-tier. The cinnamon / vanilla latte, and hot chocolate are divine. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever had better. The food is clearly made with the finest and freshest ingredients, I would appreciate an extra vegetarian option though. The Funfetti cake’s the nicest cake I’ve ever had, bar none. Some places have such a disconnect between the quality of service / produce. No matter how good the coffee is, if the service is poor, it’s going to leave a bad taste in your mouth. There’s no risk of that from Newton’s, this place effortlessly delivers in all areas. I really like the interior, it’s smart, classy, and minimalism done right. So many places fail at taking the ‘less is more’ approach without making it draining and soulless, a certain American chain springs to mind. My only nitpick is the seating, I find stools so uncomfortable, and as I struggle with a bad back it means I can never stay as long as I’d like. I completely understand the decision though, stools make best use of the rather small space, and the only way to maximise the amount of customers it can facilitate. As I say, it is just a nitpick, especially when considering that this place seems to be very much geared towards take-out. Completely agree with the review that said even when you’re lucky enough to be the only person inside, there is still such a warm atmosphere which is impressive. Like another reviewer, I too can struggle with interactions due to social anxiety but the owner somehow does the impossible and makes it not daunting at all, a joy in fact. Any day that begins with a Newton’s coffee and a little chat with the owner I know is going to be a great day. Cannot recommend enough. This isn’t news but it’s such an injustice, the domination of mediocre chains, when places like this are a 100 x better. It makes me so happy to see an independent smashing it, in spite of all the obstacles, against all the odds. Newton’s has already amassed a strong and devoted following, and I just know it will continue to go from strength to strength. This guy is doing everything right, and deserves all the success...
Read moreSo, so good. When there are so many great places for coffee in Newcastle, you don’t often go out of your way to a particular cafe or coffee house, but Newtons is one of those places. It’s the sort of place that as a travelling youngster you’d hope your dogeared Lonely Planet would take you to. The coffee is fantastic, the vegan chocolate torte is delicious, and while if you wrote that about some London bistro it would sound proper pretentious, Newtons is so down to earth. I can struggle with social interactions, but the owner is so welcoming, and even if you’re lucky enough to be the only customer in there, the atmosphere is lively and welcoming. Go there for...
