We've been here twice now (during the day). Visit 1: The first time we went for drinks as it opened - the staff were prepared for customers unlike some pubs when they "open". Fast service, the guy had good craic Visit 2: food and drinks - one of us is a vegan, so we went back for opening on a Friday- for pub food. We got the burger as well as fish and chips. The burger was very nice- I'd give the rating 5 stars but I have to say the "fish" was a let down. Having eaten at The Ship for many months and thoroughly enjoyed the tofu "fish" I was expecting something on the same level but it seems banana blossom is more chewy and harder to cut which resulted in me leaving some (never left any tofu ;)). I'd probably change this to 5 stars in future when I've eaten everything else in the menu aside from the "fish" - wishing them all success in the new venture! Notes: Beers: vast array - conscious vegans use unfiltered. Lots of real ales Coffee: tasty fresh ground coffee Free jukebox! Freddy the Italian greyhound! Canny staff

I was in relatively early on Tuesday so it was quiet but it started to fill up. I had some great beer and they had dandelion and burdock on tap which my wife was exceptionally excited about! It is a beautiful pub with lovely staff (and dog). I feel it would have a fantastic atmosphere when it is busy going by those that came in and how well kept it is. My mum remembers it as Jesmond Railway station.

Until the original manager, supervisor, chef and cleaner team all left together in September 2023 this was my absolute favourite pub to spend time with friends, family and regulars. They all left due to the toxic micro-management of the tenancy holder. Nobody is ever allowed to run with their ideas, the tenancy holder has not allowed any "chef" to significantly modify the menu in over 5 years. "Lush scran" - There have been at least 5 "chefs" that I personally know have left due to her toxic "Zero creativity allowed" stance on the food and menu. The food hygiene rating plummeted from 5* to 1* within 3 months of the original team leaving and particularly highlighted was "Confidence in management". The pub is not kept as clean and tidy as it was. The floor tiles are lifting and the pub now looks badly maintained. There is a used toilet and cistern in the "Beer garden" which has been full of weeds for almost 2 years. The "Hanging baskets" are devoid of life but still hanging off the exterior walls. The tables and seating in the beer garden are an ugly mismatch and the pub and beer garden are full of struggling plants. It has endless character and had lovely "regulars" but the tenancy holder has all but poisoned them all away with her attitude towards them - overheard saying that "I don't want to see the same faces in here all the time" - she genuinely does not like or believe in regulars. The free vinyl jukebox is excellent - when it's actually allowed to be switched on and more often than not - it's switched off in favour of the entire back catalogue of The Rolling Stones or The Clash on loud constant repeat on the P.A system. The current young staff are lovely and friendly and I wish them all the best in their endeavours but this place would absolutely thrive with a better tenancy holder and an omnivorous menu with veggie and vegan options and a proper attitude towards maintaining and promoting a beautiful building with massive character and period features... The Quiz on a Tuesday is often very challenging and well attended so I would advise that you call to book a table, but the main 0191 281 9900 phone line has been out of order for many months and the tenancy holder has done nothing to...

Used to really enjoy going in here. Great location, dog friendly and very cosy inside.

There’s been a change in management over the last few weeks. Lee and his team were really friendly. Came in for a beer last weekend and received the worst service. Conversing with the server was painful and I felt like I wasn’t actually welcome in the bar. I went and sat outside, finished my drink and went to one of the other nearby pubs that actually treat you like a valued customer.

I’ve also noticed the staff being fairly rude to other customers as well.

Went with two stars as some of the food is okay. Not fair on the kitchen staff who aren’t customer facing.

Won’t be back. This place is well and truly on...
