We have always had amazing food at The Ship and we love that its dog friendly so we headed there today after a walk with the dog. When I went to the bar both bar staff were busy serving people so I stood next to a man who was also waiting. Just a bit further along the bar on the corner, about a foot to my right was a sign saying no service. I did notice someone come to the bar on the other side of the no service sign and he was immediately served, possibly a staff member or a regular, which we are not.

As the bar staff were finishing with their customers, a group of women came into the bar . The bar staff asked who was next and the women loudly started to order. The man and myself were ignored. A couple then walked in the door and went straight to the till area so they were also immediately served. The man and myself continued to be ignored. He was then eventually asked what he wanted. More people walked in and stood at the till end of the bar. The bar staff again shouted who's next so I shouted up 'That'll be me'. The response was "You'll need to come up here then" then proceeded to serve someone else!!!!

I had been stood at in the correct service area, as my husband had previously been offered service at the same place, and at least two bar staff had also looked at me and hadn't told me to move if I wanted served. I watched 3 sets of people be served before me (one of which was on the other side of the no service sign), so we just left. I should point out this was about 2.15 today, it wasn't late on and it wasn't so busy that the bar staff couldn't have seen me or the man standing. I'm not inclined to return as although the food is amazing, I also value good service. Thankfully there are other bars who were happy...

Me and a few of my peers were pub crawling the local bars around the area, we stumbled upon the ship inn which by first looks, deemed to be a very welcoming establishment. Under government guidlines which was no suprise, we had to wait to be seated at the entrance to the outdoor seating area. As the area was reasonably quiet we took it upon ourselfs to sit on a table not realising the audacity this would cause from the waitress who questioned us straight away and seemed to show signs of a discomforting attitude towards us. We then ordered 3 drinks as 2 were a couple and me being there 3rd wheel, I politely asked if we could split the bill. A quite stubborn quick response from the waitress is what we recieved, telling us strictly that it can only be paid in full. After brushing these passive aggressive comments off we continued to enjoy our night, as the sun was setting the evening became colder as the minutes past by. As we were sitting directly behind a outdoor heater we proceeded to turn it on, after 5 minutes or so the waitress came straight out, turned the heater off then told us that they arent for use and that they havent been tested properly. Which after these passive aggressive comments we quickly finished our drinks and proceeded to leave. My friends went out the very next day, after passing by the ship inn, to there astonisment the heaters were on in full swing. Not sure who the waitress was but after our awful experience we will not be...

Was so looking forward to eating here bit never again I had mushroom and ale pie and opted for chips as I hate mash with pie and it came with garden peas, the hubster opted for the 'fish' and chip option which came with crushed garden peas. Sounds good? Think again... The chips were not cooked through The garden peas were hard and cold And where was the ale in the mushroom and ale pie??? Infact where was the mushroom??? The pie was half filled with peas and a couple of whitish pieces of some sort of food with zero flavour the pastry was dryer that the Sahara dessert making it almosy impossible to swallow. The hubster had the same problem with his chips, the 'fish' was bland at best and the peas he can only describe as awful. For drinks he had diet coke... nothing much can go wrong there. I opted for a pot of tea which arrived 20 minutes later after a prompting was very week and no sugar or sweetener was provided luckily I carry my own. All things considered I won't be eating here again Against my previous advice to myself I gave this place another try today just incase I was mistaken... unfortunately the meal was dreadful. After waiting half an hour for the meal it came out cremated the burger was simply charcoal. A replacement was offered but I really did not want to wait for another half an hour for a mediocre (at best) meal. I will not be giving this...

Vegan Mac n cheese!! Excited to go back to Newcastle again to try their other vegan food 😍 Update; Aug 2023! We went back and tried to have the nachos but sadly they came with weird “cheese” which I was not a fan of, and because i had the mac n cheese last time I assumed it was gonna be the same cheese they used buy sadly not. Also didn’t like the chips that came with it either. My partner ate it and said it was nice but it wasn’t to my taste as it wasn’t cheesey and not a fan of the nacho chips but that’s personal taste so included a pic for anyone else who wants to see what they are like before ordering! Also then I decided I would just order mac n cheese again wasn’t a fan of the I assume Smokey spice? on top so I’ll just make sure I ask for it totally plain next time! Also FYI for anyone else who also has a phobia or dislike of dogs beware they are allowed inside and I ended up having a panic attack staff were friendly and got me water not their fault, it’s just up to the owners who can’t control their dogs :( so may not go back here again Would be nice if there was a dog free zone?

Old school pubs like this further highlight the issue with more modern minimalist pubs and why they don’t hit the same - devoid of personality and character, bring nothing different to the table, indistinguishable from the rest. The Ship Inn is one of my favourites. Cosy, quaint and in a brilliant location. Thankfully old-fashioned only in aesthetic, does not give Rule Britannia / Tory vibes, quite the opposite - LGBT+ friendly and an all vegan menu which makes me happy beyond words. Great indoor seating at all angles around the bar which for some reason I really love, great outdoor seating too which is ideal for summer. Decent drink selection. Not had food from here yet but cannot stress enough how much I admire the Ship Inn for committing to an all vegan menu. Strongly recommend this place.
