Wouldn't recommend. From the moment I walked in I knew it wasn't going to be a good experience. Customer service was very poor, the bar man was miserable and had no crack whatsoever, he didn't even say hello when I greeted him on arrival. We saw ourselves to a table and sourced our own menus from another table before going to the bar to order drinks and food. I couldn't order the item I wanted from the menu as the bar man didn't know the price and couldn't work the till, so I ordered a 'hen solo' burger instead. We couldn't start a tab and had to pay straight away, which didn't matter anyway as they don't do any desserts. When the food arrived it was immediately obvious that there was the charred remains of something protruding from my burger, the guy next to us actually asked if it was black pudding... I flipped the lid to see there was 3 thinly sliced pieces of chorizo on top which had sadly been cremated. There was a jack russell terrier roaming the restaurant who belonged to another customer, he wouldn't even eat the chorizo. Having removed the inedible chorizo, the burger would have probably been ok, had it not been for the AWFUL 'chipotle mayo' in there. It was overpowering and I couldn't taste anything else after burning my entire mouth off. The only redeeming factor of the meal was the sweet potato fries, but even these were a little too salty. It was a generous portion of fries but they didn't come with the burger, fries had to be ordered separately for £3.50 on top of £8.50 for the burger. Towards the end of our meal an Uber eats driver entered the bar and was waiting for someone to notice him. The waitress came over and rudely asked him "name?". No 'hi, how are you' etc, just the name on the order. The poor guy was spoken to like a second class citizen. Some other customers noticed this exchange too, and left without ordering. I definitely wouldn't return here, I got the feeling it was a local pub for local people and those who live more than a mile away weren't welcome. 1 star for the food and service, the 2nd star is for the jack russell, who was quite entertaining.

Tanners Arms Pub Review Visited Tanners Arms recently, and while the experience had some positive points, it ultimately fell short of my expectations. First, the service was great – the tall server was friendly and welcoming, which made a positive first impression. The pub is also dog-friendly, which is always a nice touch for pet owners. However, the menu was a bit underwhelming. While it’s a pub, I expected a bit more variety. Most of the options seemed to be either chicken or beef burgers, with about 90% of the menu being Cajun chicken-related dishes. I was looking forward to trying something new, given the pub's high rating for food, but sadly, it didn’t live up to the hype. The food itself was average. The chips were greasy and had a distinct old fryer oil taste, which was disappointing. The burger, despite being advertised as "gourmet," was very plain. It lacked any dressing or interesting flavor – just a basic burger with no excitement. For the price (Ā£17-Ā£25 per person), I expected more. The venue had a nice atmosphere, but it could use a little work in terms of upkeep and ambiance. Unfortunately, I didn’t use the toilets, so I can’t comment on those. Overall, I wanted to love this place, but the food didn’t quite hit the mark. Would I return? Maybe for a drink or to try something else on the menu, but I’ll be lowering my expectations for the food next time

Popped in here on a quiet afternoon in January 2025 for food and a drink. The barman was excellent and we ordered from one of their many menus. The thing that caught my eye was the poutine. We had recently returned from a trip around North America and had poutine in lots of places across Canada including from its heartland in Quebec. I said at the time that many of these were good especially in Quebec City, but we could do better poutine (culturally insensitive?). Generally the gravy was no better than watery chip shop gravy & could be miles better (fact) and our chips are better than their fries (opinion). This old pub just east of Newcastle gas been done up in funky deco, which matched the range in clientele, sold a slow-cooked brisket topped poutine and was wonderful. It was, rudely to Canada, better than any Poutine I'd had in Canada. High praise, but I still think it could be better. In Canada they use cheese curds and here they were mozzarella cubes and I think curds make it better (I imagine many may not enjoy the teeth-cheese squeek but I do. There is generally also much more cheese in Canadian poutine than Ouseburn poutine so I think that could make it better. The chips were great and the meaty gravy was really tasty. Beer was also pretty good too. Would definitely go back again.

Disappointing experience and a worrying approach to allergies.

The menu gave no indication of what was and wasn't gluten free. They use slang terms for meat replacements (for example: 'fricken') without including explanations of what they are made of. I have no issue at all with the use of new words for meat replacements, but without an explanation of what they're made of it was very difficult for me to try and figure out what had gluten in. This would also be difficult for people with any kinds of allergies, or autistic people with specific sensory issues around foods.

I got three sets of different advice from different staff members about what was gluten free. My partner tried to order for me after the first two sets of advice only to be told that those meals which had been recommended as suitable for me weren't GF after all. It is very worrying that the staff were not clear on allergens and were comfortable giving wrong advice. I would suggest that The Tanner's Arms should give all its staff allergen training, update their menu to refer to main allergens and keep a detailed ingredients list for their menu at the bar where food is ordered. As it was, staff kept having to disappear upstairs for long periods of time to 'double check' things - coming back with different advice every time.

Eventually a member of staff told me that out of the extensive menu I could only have one meal - salt and pepper chips or one side, oyster mushrooms. It wasn't something I would have ordered, but my friends were really keen on eating there so I ordered it.

My friends orders came and they enjoyed it, but our order didn't arrive for over half an hour after theirs, when they had already finished their meals. This was around 45 minutes from when we had first ordered. Our whole party had gone up to the bar to order at the same time.

When mine and my partners meals did arrive, they had brought me the meat version of the meal I had ordered, whereas I had ordered the vegetarian version. When I questioned this, they said 'oh, actually that one is for the other table' and went off and gave it to another party sitting in the corner who had only ordered 20 minutes ago. When my meal still didn't show up after another 5 minutes I asked for a refund as I didn't feel safe eating there.

The members of staff we dealt with were all polite and friendly, but it was very worrying that they didn't know about the allergens and were willing to guess. It was also frustrating that they didn't seem to register that it wasn't ok for one person's food to be brought out after everyone else had finished eating, when they had all ordered at the same time. When my partner's food did come he said it was alright but he had expected a bit more for the price. There did seem to be a significant disparity in the sizes between the loaded chips mains and the burger mains on our table.

I won't be trying again, and wouldn't recommend this place, especially for anyone with allergies. I would also point out incase it is helpful for anyone reading this who hasn't been before that it doesn't seem very accessible for anyone using a wheelchair or buggy, or for fat people. The door into the pub is up a couple of steps and is extremely narrow as only one half of...

The Tanners Arms: A Chilled Oasis in Ouseburn

The Tanners Arms is a Newcastle pub that offers a bit of everything. Whether you're looking for a relaxed drink with friends, a delicious meal, or a night of live music and DJs, the Tanners Arms has you covered.

Highlights:

Vibe:Ā The pub has a welcoming and laid-back atmosphere. It's known for its friendly staff and "underground" feel, with reggae and dub often playing in the background.

Food:Ā They offer a creative menu that goes beyond typical pub fare. They have a revamped burger menu, street food options, and even a Sunday roast. There are also vegetarian and vegan options available.

Drinks:Ā The Tanners Arms has a wide selection of beers on tap, including local favorites and classic brands. They also offer a good selection of wines and spirits.

Entertainment:Ā The pub has a pool table, a roof terrace, and regular DJ nights on Fridays and Saturdays. They also host pub quizzes and other events.

Things to Consider:

Location:Ā The Tanners Arms is located in the Ouseburn Valley, a bit outside the city center. However, it's still easily accessible by public transport (Manors Metro Station is 10 minutes away) and offers a more relaxed vibe than the hustle and bustle of the city center pubs.

Overall:

The Tanners Arms is a great choice for anyone looking for a pub with a bit of character. With its friendly atmosphere, delicious food, and wide selection of drinks, it's a great place to relax and unwind. If you're looking for a lively night out, the DJs and events make it a fun...
