Having played a round of golf at the fabulous Saunton Golf Club and breathed in the sea air, there is only one thing that you could have for your evening meal, fish and chips. By reputation we had to go to Squires in Braunton, and we weren't disappointed. You have the choice of takeaway or sitting in the restaurant, we chose the latter. We were welcomed and shown to our table. Although the menu had a wide range of options we all ordered 'Our award winning cod & chips'. This comes with a choice of sides; mushy peas, curry sauce, beans or garden peas. You also get the choice of Coffee or Tea. The meal was cooked to perfection. The cod was a succulent thick fillet of fish with a light crisp batter (None of that stoggy, fat soaked stuff). The chips had a crisp outer layer and fluffy potato centre. You can certainly understand why they are award winning. The staff were polite, attentive and happy to engage in conversation, whilst still being efficient with service. You will have to go many a mile to try and find a better cod & chips anywhere in the Country. You should visit Devon just to try the cod and chips at Squires.

Quick update at bottom of the page so i call in to squires fish and chip take away while passing through Braunton. called in for a medium sized battered cod. the place was super clean and lots of staff. was busy but turn around was fast. regarding the fish it was hands down the tastiest cod i have ever had. flawless. the batter was super tasty also. will call in again for sure. very impressed. this was the take away i can only imagine how good the restaurant is. if you find this review helpful please like it thank you It's been a while since I've been down here, I just called in and asked for a battered cod. I got it to take away, he wrapped it all up and I headed back to my car. Put some tunes on and slowly unwrapped my supper, and dove in. For a minute I wondered if I was hyped it too much last time and raised my expectations. Wrong... it was even better than last time or equally as good. Each bite left a lush after taste, like a hint of lemon vinegar.. juicy white flakes, crunchy and parts soft of batter, absolutely delicious. Just thought I'd share a quick update

Had heard great things about Squires and was looking forward to trying however disappointingly I have to say it was the least favourite meal of the week on our stay in Devon. The meal was extremely dry for a start, the batter was crisp and the fish was tasty but there was not much grease to it. Some people may like this but to me, a proper chippy has to have some moisture. The chips were extremely dry and not soft and fluffy like proper chippy chips. Secondly, unfortunately we found two hairs in our food. If it was just the one I could kinda pass it as a one off but two..not really acceptable. One hair was found in the butter, the other was found in the curry sauce! So overall our visit to Squires was very underwhelming and the hairs were quite the put off. I wouldn’t return.

Not sure what all the other viewers have been eating but have they never been to a proper chip shop? Adequate. Firstly, order online. They don't allow entry into the shop so you have to order from outside the door where someone takes your order. Nice enough chap and very apologetic due to having to wait around outside the take away with a group of other eager customers for 45 mins, when the order arrived. So if it's raining, take a brolly. Chips are nice but they're soggy which was made worse when I added the curry sauce. If that's what it was meant to be, because it's not the traditional chip shop curry sauce you'd expect.. Sweet and tasted like an Indian style mango curry. Awful. The chips soaked it up so they were even more soggy and fell apart.. The batter on the sausage was over cooked, thin and not light and fluffy and the sausage was smaller in size too. Disappointing. The batter on the fish was the worst batter I've ever seen. I wish I'd taken a photo. A thin coating with no fluffy, bubbly batter in sight. And sweet. Do they add sugar? Because my partner is a diabetic and her sugar reading went through the roof after eating it! It was almost as though the fish was wrapped in a sweet, thin pancake! Again, awful but the fish itself was nice. A plus side is they do gluten free batter but again, sweet and thin. And no pies!!!! What's that about? Call yourself a chip shop, I think not! Someone above said 'the best chip shop in Devon'? I think they may have lost their sense of taste and smell from catching the C virus, because this place, though looks amazing, they're trying to be too 'posh nosh' and have no idea what proper fish and chips should be like. Definitely not the best and far from it. Not recommended and over priced for...

Hi, I found this establishment purely by chance when I asked a local in a local supermarket car park, where the best fish and chips are in the area and he directed me to Squires at Braunton. He said they were open all day and they have a very convenient car park opposite. He said that if this car park was full then Squires have won at the rear. This would be perfect for me as I was in a motorhome and would find difficulty parking a large vehicle. But the car park opposite was very accessible and convenient and right in the centre of town at £2 for 3 hours. He also told me that they would be open all day I didn't close at 2:00 p.m. Squires have two shops side by side, the main kitchen area and takeaway section. It has a large restaurant adjacent which was very full at 4:00 oclock. The staff were very helpful when I ordered two cod and chips and curry sauce for £24. They even provided batter bits, locally known as squibbles which I have never heard of before. They have three fish size options small, medium or large and we had the medium which were quite large and more than adequate for our elderly appetites. The chips were not quite to our liking as there were quite large and fat and we much prefer the smaller crispy ones. The fish that was excellent with the batter very crispy and no soggy bits. All round it was a pleasant meal and more than enough to satisfy our appetites. We didn't have to wait long for our order and it was presented in a brown paper carrier bag with a very friendly smile and enjoy your meal. I would certainly recommend this establishment for your fish and chips and if we are ever in the area again we shall certainly purchase...

Having visited Squires for many years, bringing friends and family, I don't doubt for one minute that they are the best fish and chips (and chicken curry) and it's always a meal we look forward to booking, but the last few visits the service seems to be slipping. Go back to August when we booked a table for 9 of us. We arrived to be told we were being seated on two separate tables, not even near each other. Finally after getting someone else to help it was sorted, but this shouldn't have happened in the first place. If the system lets you book a table for 9, you expect to be able to all sit together. The next gripe over the last three visits..don't offer unlimited chips if you aren't going to fulfill the promise..on two occasions Cherry asked if we wanted more chips yet they never turned up at all (today's visit being one of these instances) Being seated upstairs in the corner it was difficult to flag a member of staff as they were clearly run off their feet..finally when I could get someone it was 20mins later and frustration had set in so we asked for the bill instead. We would have ordered desserts but because of this I just felt I'll go to the Coop and take a pudding home instead. Thirdly just a bit of feedback for staff when serving drinks. It's not seen as hygienic to hold the glass from above with fingers touching the parts of the glass where customers mouths will make contact. Glasses/cups/mugs should be held at the base...
