First visit today, drawn in by positive word of mouth recommendations. I came with my best friend & we ate lunch & a cream tea. It's everything you want in a local cafe, good honest food & drink & decent hard working owners & staff. It's a small place but you don't feel as if the table next door is too close & it's got a very friendly atmosphere. Chit-Chat and comments between tables didn't feel awkward. For a small cafe the choice of both drinks & food is impressive & I wish I'd arrived 15 mins earlier to try the cooked breakfast as it sounds wonderful. I settled for scrambled egg on granary which was perfectly cooked & devoured with great enjoyment. My friend had a jacket potato, not sure what filling as I was concentrating on my own food but she left a clean plate & said hers was equally as nice. I had a Dirty Chai Latte which was really well presented and tasted really good. We could have left at that point totally satisfied but decided that the cream tea needed sampling so stayed for that too & I'm delighted to report that those scones were amazing, very very fresh, certainly not been anywhere near a microwave like some cafés do (shame on all those). Crunchy on the outside soft in the middle (Armadillo !), We asked for some to take away & returned a little later to pick them up as they were freshly baked. The great reviews are well deserved & I hope mine helps to bolster their status. The staff are friendly, chatty & very welcoming. They know their business well & I hope Barnstaple looks after them because they certainly deserve to be...
Read moreLove this cafe we visited a few weeks ago. The menu is reasonably priced given the focus on quality, making it a perfect spot for breakfast, coffee and cake—or even something more substantial. When we visited, I went straight for The Big One. They serve breakfast until 2pm which is great news if you’re a late riser or if you’ve been out the night before! The Big One is for those with an immense appetite (£14.95) but there are smaller options available. T went for the Ultimate BLT Handcrafted Sandwich (£11.95), swapping crisps for fries for an extra £2.25 from their lunch menu which also includes paninis, toasties and jacket potatoes to mention a few things.
I can safely say that the cooked breakfast was an immensely satisfying plate of food. The meat is sourced from a nearby butcher and you could taste the quality; the bacon was thick and flavourful, and the sausages were meaty and dense. It came together like every big breakfast should—with lots of toast and a good cuppa on the side.
The Ultimate BLT was an absolute behemoth—packed full of thick cut bacon and served with fries (a new option on the menu, swapped for crisps). The soft fresh bread kept packed sandwich together in a chunky bacon filled parcel – you need a big mouth to chomp it in one! Along with breakfasts and lunches, there are fresh cakes and their legendary waffles, for those with a sweet tooth you have plenty of choice.
They're very dog friendly and willing to go that extra mile for...
