My husband booked a table for a Mother’s Day brunch for ourselves and our two children, specifically stating in the booking request that we would need a high chair for our toddler and space for a pram (as our daughter is only 8 weeks old). The reply stated “no problem”, so we assumed this meant we would have our requirements met.
When we arrived, we noticed there were stairs to get into the venue. My husband went ahead to ask a staff member to help us with the pram as he had our toddler in a carrier. He was unable to find a member of staff to help so we had to ask someone else who was trying to enter at the same time. Not a huge red flag as we put it down to the staff being busy.
My husband found a member of staff to tell them we had arrived for our booking, and got told our table was upstairs. Obviously as we had a pram, this wasn’t an option. The staff member quickly said she could just push two tables together downstairs to make room for us, and showed us to our table. It was difficult to manoeuvre the pram through the tables but again, we just put this down to it being busy. We would have appreciated if the staff member could have helped us with this, but again, not a huge red flag.
We sat down and my husband asked for the high chair we had requested; the staff member told us “I’ll go and look for one”. We assumed she would get the high chair from the table upstairs that had originally been allocated to us, and she would return swiftly. After 20 minutes, she had still not returned. We asked another member of staff who told us “someone else is using it but I’m sure they won’t be long”.
At this point, we decided to leave. We told the waitress this and she said “well they’ve got their food so it probably won’t be long anyway”, and was arguably quite hostile (but I appreciate this may have just been my personal interpretation, and I was admittedly in a bad mood at this point). We repeated that we would be leaving and the waitress simply walked off.
As we left, we heard another table saying they had been waiting for 40 minutes for food, so perhaps it’s just as well that there was no high chair availability (despite our request), as waiting for 40 minutes with a toddler and a newborn wouldn’t have been possible, and we would have had to leave anyway.
After reading other positive reviews about The Beach House, we were optimistic that it would be a nice experience for Mother’s Day, but instead, we were made to feel like an inconvenience for their failure to read the booking requests despite telling us it would be “no problem”.
Very, very disappointing and we will not...
Read moreWe came to Whitley Bay for the first time with family (2 adults, 2 kids - 8 and 5) yesterday (Sunday). Parked up around lunch time and started wandering to find somewhere to eat. Saw The Beach House and thought it looked perfect: seating outside with a bit of shade, a couple of free tables, a nice looking place. So we waited by the entrance, to be seen by one of the serving staff and when greeted we asked for a table of 4. He hurried off inside after mumbling something incoherently.
So, we waited by the door for a few minutes assuming he was coming back to show us to a table. However, when he did return he told us they weren't serving at the moment (it was around 12:20), and said they'd be serving again at 1pm.
Very strange behaviour, especially considering the menu says they're open between 8:30am - 7pm on a Sunday (albeit, per the menu, breakfast stops at 11:30 and mains aren't served until 12:30 - this could have been communicated much more clearly by the member of staff we spoke to). I understand it if the kitchen have had a busy morning, and needed a break to catch-up, but that should be communicated as soon as people arrive, or they should have a sign up or something. To be honest, it felt very much like the team had just decided they couldn't be bothered. Shockingly poor experience.
Anyway, we walked down to Fishermens Bay which was excellent, so my advice is to go there instead and give this place...
Read moreGreat find amongst other anonymous eateries along the Whitley bay seafront. Decor is fun, quirky, and the wall comments caught my eye as well as the inventive range of cakes. My hummingbird cake was truly scrumptious, moist raspberry walnut sponge with hints of pineapple topped with lemon cheesecake cream decorated with banana, raspberries and extra toasted walnuts. Yum, is it making your mouth water. My son's dark millionaire caramel chocolate shortbread slice was equally delicious. We also looked on in awe as the other guy at our table wolfed down a gargantuan beef burger n chips garnished with fresh coleslaw and salad. My family know l like to write reviews so l was told l couldn't possibly give it less than 5 stars. I would have anyway. Being endorsed by a whole family means no one can be disappointed by choosing this place to eat. Definitely worth a visit. Wish wish l could get hummingbird cake in London and the decaff Cappuccino...
