Finally, we got to visit Hinnies after being defeated by COVID and changes to opening hours on our previous forays north. The menu has a good choice of dishes very reasonably priced at £31 per head for three courses. For starters, I had the black pudding scotch egg which came with nice a runny yolk although I would have preferred more than a smear of the rhubarb ketchup. The good lady was very satisfied with her cod fritter. For mains she had the steak and chips served with a fantastically rich bordelaise sauce. I went for the pan haggerty which was elegantly served with poached egg, mustard sauce and seasonal greens. The sauce was a little lacking in substance not helped by the residual water leaking from the overcooked egg. For desert the wife had the singing hinnies. While I chose the steamed ginger pudding with marmalade ice cream. The sponge was not warm which made it rather dense. The marmalade ice cream was actually ice cream with a (generous amount) of marmalade sauce. While the issues over food quality were all pretty minor we did feel that the dishes did the bare minimum and lacked a wow factor. The service was quite perfunctory. At no point during the meal were we asked if everything was OK. The waiter also had a habit of leaning across the diner when serving. The experience overall left us feeling a little flat. However I will point out that the restaurant was very busy on a Wednesday evening and everyone we spoke to prior to our visit highly recommended Hinnies. Maybe we caught them on a bad night?

Sadly after a great experience with the girls, I took my husband for his birthday and it was total opposite. We had the 2 course lunch, my started was the cod fritter which was claggy on top of a dry corn bread it was impossible to eat without a drink, needs a sauce to make it easier to eat. The black pudding scotch egg had by my husband was nice but stone cold. We then waited an hour for our mains whilst the kitchen focused on preparing meals for their social media posts. We saw 4 dishes come out of the kitchen, including the fish of day which my husband had ordered, all go sailing past us to the member of staff at the front of the restaurant to take photos of in different settings! Eventually our mains came out, my chicken was ok a little lacking of seasoning, the potatoes were delish. My husband's cod of the day was however raw halfway through and totally translucent. The hand cooked chips looked like the scraps out of the bottom of a bag of frozen chips, however they were hot! The waiter kindly comped my husband's meal, but I can't stop feeling that if the chefs and the marketing staff member had paid as much care and attention to their actual customers, rather than their social media content then we would have had a much better experience. On that basis we will not be back.

Heads up, mamas (and anyone with little ones)! This place is an absolute gem! Visited on July 12, 2025, around 5–6 PM, and I cannot recommend it enough — honestly a 200/100 experience! The food was special, but what really blew us away was the service. We had a fussy, hungry baby with us, and the lovely lady who seemed like the manager (wish I had gotten her name! 🥲) was incredibly kind and thoughtful. She offered us an ice bucket to help cool the baby’s milk and even checked in to ask if I’d like my food warmed up later since I was still feeding and couldn’t eat right away. 🥹 Little gestures like that make a huge difference for tired, flustered parents! If you’re heading to Whitley Bay, definitely kick off your trip here — you’ll leave with a full belly and a full heart. 💛

We booked this with high expectations based on past experience and made it clear it was for a special occasion, but the quality and attention to detail throughout was the worst I've ever experienced in a restaurant. Some (of many) examples: they seated 6 of us on a table for 4. The food was absolutely dreadful, where surely it was only junior chefs working on a Saturday night. Best example was the 'steak with peppercorn sauce', that wasn't made with peppercorns or cream; it was simply a basic, albeit sweet and salty, gravy that ruined the steak. They even argued to our face that not all peppercorn sauce is made with peppercorns as they 'make it their own way'. When the waiter offered for us to talk to the chef, the chef then wouldn't come out - we only had an empty offer of going into the kitchen to talk to the chef but when we said yes, they didn't then follow up. A different meal came out cold, then after it was returned it was so salty we all tried it and agreed it was inedible. The service was also poor. When ordering they asked us if we wanted the kids meals as soon as they were ready, and we said yes. 45mins later they had served and cleared all adult starters. Then when they served two adult meals, we asked where the kids meals were and reminded them they were meant to come out early. The waitress stared at us like we were crazy instead of answering, then continued to serve every adult meal. To cap it off, they sent over a junior waitress with the bill and didn't even let her know of the issues we'd had. When she asked how the meal was and we said it was very poor, she told us that we must be kidding around. This was on a Saturday night when you'd expect it to be the best quality, so I dread to think what it'd be like on other nights. We've been regular customers but will never step foot in...

We had such a fantastic experience at Hinnies Restaurant. From the moment we stepped in, we were warmly welcomed and instantly felt comfortable with the cozy and stylish atmosphere. The setting is relaxed yet elegant, with a lovely balance between modern décor and a homely feel, making it a perfect place for both casual dining and special occasions.

The menu is full of exciting choices, celebrating traditional dishes with a fresh and creative twist. Every plate that came to our table was beautifully presented and packed with flavor. The ingredients tasted so fresh and carefully sourced, which really made a difference. The starters were a delight, full of rich and authentic taste, and the main courses were cooked to perfection with generous portions. Dessert was the highlight—absolutely delicious and the perfect sweet ending to the meal.

What truly stood out was the service. The staff were attentive without being intrusive, friendly, and genuinely passionate about the food they served. They were happy to recommend dishes and drinks, and their knowledge about the menu made us appreciate our choices even more.

The whole experience felt well thought out, from the calm background music to the smooth service timing. The restaurant also has a beautiful location, which adds to the overall charm of dining here. It’s clear that Hinnies takes pride in offering not just food, but a memorable dining experience.

Overall, Hinnies Restaurant exceeded our expectations. Delicious food, excellent service, and a warm atmosphere made it one of the best dining experiences we’ve had recently. We would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a place that serves high-quality food with genuine hospitality, and we are already looking forward to coming...

Yesterday for lunch a birthday treat as i will be away on the actual day. Id never bee to the place before or even heard of the place until.my friend sent a message to say he'd booked the table. On arrival greeted by two lovely young staff who were very pleasant and attentative. The only menu on offer was the Festive Menu 2 course or three course. Though limited to a selection was well presented though if choosing separate dishes would be fairly expensive for a lunch. However the special menu is ok. My friend opted for the Turkey as main course i went for the braised beef in red wine sauce. We both chose the traditional Prawn Cocktail starter. Very nice and a touch spicy sauce good portion and a sliver of brown bread and a portion butter maybe extra slice of bread would be nice. Now to main course my friend thought the Turkey a little on the dry side and the gravy little thin in consistency as was the gravy with the beef rather tasteless. I couldnt help but think that same gravy for all meals. Accompaniments with the turkey ( couple slices) red cabbage, two roast pots and three sprouts little meagre portions even for a lunch time. Mine opted for the spinach as im not a lover of red cabbage. Small tasty portion and the creamed potato very smooth and a creamy taste. Throughout the staff checked on us and brought the jug of water without being asked for it. My Rose wine just a nice tang and refreshing. Overall the ambiance and service was very good. Toilets immaculate. Cost reasonable for two courses and coffees glass wine ( not asked if i preferred large or small) and a coke for the driver. Well worth a visit and i will go again after my travels. Merry Christmas to all see...
