Having not been to place since the lockdown, i thought i would book it for a family meal to celebrate my upcoming 50th as i knew the food menu and the landlords were fantastic . Unbeknown to me the owners had changed hands !
The food menu was minimal and pretty much basic, i fancied a steak as did others but was off the menu. Most of us went for a traditional Sunday roast. Family who ordered the pork roast were told when it was brought out that there was no apple sauce available , that's a staple for any pork dinner ! The beef was like leather , potatoes only Luke warm and the servings were like a child's portion. After we ordered 8 puddings but only 6 came out and when mentioned we were missing 2 and it took a further 15 minutes to arrive, everybody else had finished .... I did manage to get some money off the bill but it still cost £187 ( not including drinks ) Overall really disappointed with the food and the service. It was obvious the staff new that i had said something as when we went to bar after they were giving me daggers lol
Used to be a brilliant place to eat but its really gone down hill which...
Read moreThis was my first trip to Atherstone and I was meeting with three relatives for the first time. The Kings Head website promised it to be an ideal place to meet for lunch with its garden by the canal and its freshly prepared food. It is actually very close to a noisy dual carriageway but this is screened by trees. The menu for Sunday lunch was on one sheet of paper. Two of us chose roast dinners and the other two chose the one vegetarian option. I would have liked fish and chips with a salad, but neither were on offer. The veggie option was a very small portion and really not value for money. I chose citron tart for pudding. This had obviously been taken out of a packet and defrosted. It did not taste fresh. My spoon (no dessert fork) was also wrapped in a damp paper napkin. The service was otherwise very good. The pub was clean but not very warm and felt rather damp, despite the warm and dry weather outside. Considering Sunday lunch time is usually very busy, it was rather telling that the pub...

Now on to the review. This place is hidden gem. I'm from up north and have been coming to atherstone since being a baby. Came down this week for the funeral of a loved one. After going from a stroll down the canal to calm down, my partner and I found this place. The music and atmosphere is great, classic from the likes of the beatles and talking heads. Very relaxed. The staff are proper gentlemen, treat you so well and have brilliant manners and service. Shout out to Mark the waiter. Lovely chap and from another former worker in table service your doing a great job. The food is phenomenal, I am the sort of person that always finds a fault (check out my other google reviews). But credit where it's due. My partner had a chicken and mushrooms pie. We both loved our food so much we went back the next day and made the same order. This place now has a special place in my heart.
Give this place a chance. You will not be...
