Disappointed really as I've downgraded what was once a 5* rating.
Unfortunately, I feel the standard of food has somewhat declined at Unthank. Previously they were fantastic with all dishes and their roasts were up there as some of the best in Norwich.
I went as a group of 4 for a Sunday Roast with my husband, brother in law and his partner. 2 of the group ended up with food poisoning which as a result had a real impact on the first day of our honeymoon. Understandably, that is sometimes the risk of going out for food, but when this was flagged with the UA, their response was 'we've had no other complaints' and that they had maybe picked up a bug as they had been together all weekend. Honestly intrigued by that suggestion as unsurprisingly I've been far closer to my husband all weekend, given it was our wedding.
The potatoes were clearly reheated at only early part of the service and the vegan dish was very small (but I was hungry so cracked on). The chicken reportedly tasted strange. However, one member of staff was very standoffish and made us feel as though asking or raising anything with her was unreasonable and a hassle, so I honestly don't think I would have felt comfortable to raise anything as it was. Most of the chicken was left by both because of this.
Their non-roast menu is still okay, but again has fallen a bit behind what it used to be. Such a shame as it's a wonderful staple in the area and has a great choice of...
Read moreFirst of all, the venue had a great atmosphere, the staff were very friendly; they allowed us to bring a couple of dogs in and even provided us with a bowl of water for them without us even having to ask, and that's considering they were busy.
The food took a while to arrive however it was Sunday lunchtime so I'm not too bothered about this.
The main meals were all very nice, gravy was a little runny, but the quality was excellent. However, one of the meals arrived a bit cold(although the quality was still high), it was replaced though. They were quite expensive. About £11 for sausage and mash, but if you're looking for good quality food it's probably worth it.
Desserts took ages to arrive(I'm talking at lease half an hour and we had to ask twice. I wouldn't mind so much but not all of us had them, and the three desserts we had were ice cream, cheesecake and apple crumble which shouldn't really take that long. When the desserts eventually arrived, they looked stunning.
My cheesecake was honestly one of the best looking bits of food I have ever seen, I have included a picture. I was disappointed with the taste however, it was okay, but considering the price I expected better.
I would recommend this place, however not...
Read moreSadly having given this place a great review in the past, let me say this is a food review, the bar remains 4 Star. However the food at the Unthank has gone downhill post COVID, I was there a few weeks ago with my partner and a friend. I ordered the fish and chips, it looked great, however the fish was seriously overcooked, hard and dry, chips were nice , but the strangest tartar sauce I have ever had. I sat there thinking my local chippy is better than this at half the price. Pre COVID this one one of the best places to eat in the Unthank area, now like so many others around it serves basic poorly cooked food. I expect a bar/restaurant to be able to produce food better than a local chippy. My friend found his vegan burger bland and tasteless, however my partner enjoyed her meal, even though it came as what was not described. So £120 for two poor meals and a good one is...
