3rd visit to Sherwood. The star rating represents an overall view of the three visits. It's fair to say that had the business been rated on my last visit alone I would have awarded 5 stars on the takeaway haddock and chips which I thoroughly enjoyed. The shop has a whimsical, seaside setting. Outside, an array of deckchairs by an astroturf lawn, inside repro Bamforth postcards, a cutout for a comic photo and the male employees wearing knotted handkerchiefs; only the 'kiss me quick' hats were missing. However much this adds to the ambiance, I'm here for the grub. There is an extensive menu representing what the sea, and more, has to offer but I know exactly why I'm here. The first couple of times I came I was offered skin on haddock or skinless cod. I settled for the cod only because I tend to shy away from eating the skin; separating the fish and skin post cooking is a total bind. On the third time of asking, yeah, skinless haddock is proffered as an option. I'm in. The lass on the till offered salt, vinegar and (batter) bits. Just salt and vinegar for me, although I prefer to attend to that myself. A few people waiting and one or two other tasks pending so that was about the total of our exchange, pleasant enough but I like to chat and get a bit of business background. No chance today. Waiting for my food I had time to look around at the fresh fish counter, no takers whilst I was in, and the seating area with a few customers eating in at my 3.30 arrival time. The business has captured a number of awards over the last few years. A veritable haul for fish and chips, and even including Fish and Chip shop pie champion 2019. The shop is MSC certified and advertises which potatoes are being fried, today, it's Challenger, particularly suited to chipping. This business cooks in beef dripping, always my preference and certainly the cooking medium of choice during the early days before the 'palm oil revolution'. I am a purist and stick to what I like and have known for over 60 years. Having said that other cooking options are available. Just under ten minutes later a pre-wrapped package arrives. These guys are seriously into recycling, cardboard, monogrammed box (reminding how low in fat and calories fish and chips are compared with some other take aways), paper bag, wooden knife and fork. Hardly a sign of plastic anywhere. Unfortunately, out of takeaway menus today though. The parcel is taken, opened and shortly enjoyed in a leafy road away from the busy site of the shop. No lengthy trip to allow the contents to ferment! I find well cooked fish in cripy thin batter and flavoursome fresh chips (I was disappointed with the chips on an earlier visit), more salt and vinegar needed for my taste and perhaps the server could invite customers to add their own before parcelling up. Overall a very enjoyable meal. I'm sure the seaside theme attracts some customers, especially those eating in. Again, the purist in me says, a well cooked fish and chips, chatty, helpful staff and you're on to a winner. Takes credit cards. Opening hours extensive. Parking on the busy main road tricky but options available. Licensed. Recent news: No longer utilising beef dripping; I leave the star rating FTB but personally feel this is a...
Read moreThe Cod’s Scallops has never been my favourite fish and chip shop, and I’ve not been in there for some years. But my partner’s mother made us aware of a Monday night take away only deal where you get a small portion of fish and chips, a choice of sauce, and a can of fizzy drink for £5.
When we arrived in the early evening the queue was nearly out of the door. And we had to wait probably about 10 minutes to get to the front of it and about another 10 minutes for the food to be ready. Staff were pleasant – particularly the girl on the till serving.
In a sense, the contents of the box flattered to deceive. There looked to be a decent portion of fish and pro rata amount of chips. But when you delved deeper with your fork, there was hardly any white fish, or fish at all. Mainly batter, and what felt like a chewy combination of the base of the fish with that. Not particularly enjoyable to eat.
Overall, £5 is still quite a bargain for what you get and we worked out probably an equivalent size meal plus a sauce and a drink sourced elsewhere for two people would’ve cost at least double what we paid, if not more. That said, to repeat, there was virtually no fish inside the batter and that really does defeat the object of buying FISH and chips.
On the basis of our experience this evening, I doubt I would make the effort to return there in the future. An average...
Read moreDisappointed. This was my first experience of Cod’s Scallops having only heard rave reviews. I’m not local, so opportunity to go does not come up often. I walked to the Wollaton branch (20 mins) with a friend of mine who lives locally. I’d checked before hand that the restaurant closed at 9:30pm. We arrived, shortly after 8:45pm to be told we couldn’t eat in & that it was takeaway only. Out of curiosity I asked what time last orders were, and was told 9pm. Having therefore stated we were in time, the chef (with a grimace) just pointed out to me the nearest table of four currently occupied. I was a little confused. The restaurant had two tables occupied, a four and a two. Not exactly ‘heaving’ and overrun! He clearly just wanted to finish up and head home. I get it, I’ve worked in hospitality, but this is poor…..we ended up getting one portion to share as we knew it would be cold by the time we got home and ended up cooking our own pizza instead! The food was very good, although just warm by the time we got home, but my first impression has been very much tainted. I will try again, when I get the chance, in the hope of redemption - but this is poor customer service and...
