I recently visited Tipu Sultan in Leicester for the first time, and unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the most disappointing dining experiences I’ve ever had. We had a reservation for 8:00 PM, but upon arrival, the manager made us wait unnecessarily while he continued a personal conversation with friends, completely disregarding our booking and the fact that we were clearly waiting to be seated.
Once we were finally shown to our table, it was immediately evident that it hadn’t been properly cleaned. There were visible food remnants on the seats, which was both unappetizing and unhygienic. We had to ask for the area to be cleaned before sitting down, which should have already been done as a basic standard of service.
After placing our order, we were served drinks in glasses that were visibly damaged—cracked and chipped, which is a serious safety concern. When we asked the waiter for replacement glasses, he dismissed our request and carried on as if it was an inconvenience. No effort was made to rectify the situation, and we were left to drink from glasses that should never have been put on a customer’s table.
Following the starters, we requested our main courses. However, after waiting an unreasonable amount of time with no update, we had to flag down a different waiter to ask again. Only then were our mains brought out—after a further delay of around 30 minutes.
To add to the frustration, the butter chicken we ordered was served with just three small pieces of chicken. Even our waitress appeared shocked at the portion size. We requested to speak with the manager once more, but yet again, he delayed coming to our table and showed little concern when he eventually did.
By this point, our patience was completely worn out, and we no longer had any desire to continue dining there. We asked for our food to be packed so we could leave. Unfortunately, this too took an additional 20 minutes, despite our obvious frustration and intent to just get out of there.
From beginning to end, the experience was incredibly poor—unprofessional management, neglectful service, substandard food portions, and serious hygiene concerns. I would strongly advise others to avoid this establishment. Tipu Sultan Leicester is, without question, one of the worst restaurants I’ve visited in terms of customer service, cleanliness, and overall...
Read moreDuring my visit to Tipu Sultan in Leicester, it was my first experience at this branch, having previously dined at their Birmingham location. Situated conveniently in Oadby, this restaurant is easily accessible and stands out prominently in the area. The ambiance immediately captured my attention with its grandeur. The intricate lighting arrangements gave the place a regal charm, reminiscent of a palace. While the decor was impressive, I felt that incorporating more royal-style furniture would further enhance the palace-like experience. Nevertheless, I admired the effort put into creating a luxurious atmosphere.
The service, however, was truly remarkable and left a lasting impression. From the moment I arrived, I was warmly welcomed and promptly guided to my table. The staff presented the menu courteously and allowed ample time for me to make my selections without feeling rushed. Preksha, an attentive and highly professional stewardess, stood out for her exceptional service. She patiently listened to our preferences, offered excellent starter recommendations, and ensured that the service was seamless throughout the meal. The team’s attention to cleanliness was notable, as they maintained a tidy environment even during our meal. Preksha’s frequent and professional check-ins added a personal touch, making the experience all the more enjoyable. For their impeccable service, I would give them full marks.
When it came to the food, however, my expectations fell short, especially when compared to my previous experience at their Birmingham branch. The flavors that had delighted me there were not fully replicated in Leicester. For instance, the sheekh kebabs contained an overwhelming amount of onions, while the gravy in some dishes leaned towards a sweeter taste due to an excess of tomatoes. That said, certain items did stand out— the rumaali roti was delightful, and both the vegetarian biryani and chips were flavorful and enjoyable.
Overall, my experience at Tipu Sultan Leicester was relaxing and comfortable, with the ambiance and service being the standout features. While the food did not quite meet my expectations, taste is subjective, and I would still recommend this restaurant for its exceptional service and splendid atmosphere. It is certainly worth a visit for anyone seeking a unique and royal...

Tipu Sultan is a unique restaurant that offers fine majestic dining, perfect for couples, families and friends. They describe their restaurant as a place to relax, enjoy and live like the Sultan and this is just how we felt! 😁
We visited Tipu Sultan in Leicester just before Ramadhan started, therefore there was a very long wait, however you can reserve a table before hand...🕢. They have large waiting area, however you will be lucky to find a seat at busy times.
The decor in Tipu Sultan is stunning and sets this restaurant apart from anything else with its huge chandeliers and attention to detail all round.
The menus are clean and detailed with plenty of traditional options as you would expect. Very reasonably priced too for the service they offer. Here is everything we tried:
Popadums- This goes really well the chutney selection.
Sultani chops - Tipu Sultans signature dish. Mutton chops marinated in herbs and spices. Cooked over a blazing shargrill served with garnish. These were highly recommendable, very tasty with the chutney and onions.
Papri Chaat - Crispy papris, cooked with potatoes, chillies, yoghurt, tamarind sauce and spices. Can’t go wrong with any type of chaat. This papri chaat was heavenly!
Butter Chicken - Chicken stripped off the bone and cooked in a full bodied creamy sauce. This was full of rich flavour.
Tandoori Naan - Traditionally made and cooked in the tandoor.
All the items we tried tasted delicious and we were very happy with the service given. The staff are friendly and experienced.
Tipu Sultan has a segregated prayer room so there is no need to rush, you can enjoy both your food and fulfil your prayers with ease!
Card payment is accepted here. There is a onsite parking available, however this was full when we went but we did manage to find a nearby free carpark. 🚘
Tipu Sultan in Leicester are HMC approved. Please note, not all the branches are HMC.
We would visit Tipu Sultan again anytime! And definitely recommend if you like your Indian classics. Our Rating: 9/10
