Café Makaan — Restaurant in Oadby and Wigston

I am leaving this review regarding my experience at the Afternoon Tea I had on 18th feb 2024. Before deciding to leave this review, I emailed Cafe Makaan and left a review through their personal feedback system and they did not respond at all. To begin with - Prior to our booking I was contacted multiple times (during work, after work) before the tea and told different things by different people each time regarding the food and the amounts and the menu and price. The afternoon tea comes with a set menu which the cafe failed to provide. On the day of the afternoon tea , when we arrived all of the food was just immediately put down on the tables, with no structure. We had 3 different servers coming into the room at different times, asking the same questions and repeating themselves which meant we had to then repeat ourselves, or let them know we had already answered ther server previously. We were asked to order drinks without giving us the selection of drinks (menu) to order from, upon prompting the server, they then went and retrieved a menu for us to make the selection. We were very disappointed with the food. It was cold on arrival. We appreciate that food is made in advance, however there appeared to be no effort in attempting to reheat the food up. The sandwiches were of very poor quality. They had little to no filling. The chicken on brioche bread was extremely sweet and not savoury as it should be, which was such a shame as we were really looking forward to some delicious sandwiches. We were not given any nuts as mentioned on the afternoon tea menu, even though we mentioned it to the server, nor was there any papdi chaat as mentioned on the menu either. Furthermore the hot drinks were not offered to us until we ourselves mentioned it to the sever. My daughter did not receive a hot drink at all, this was also part of the menu!! On the princess stand ( part of the children’s afternoon tea) the ice cream was given with the rest of the food at the beginning of the meal and so by the time it was going to be eaten it had all melted. We were given 2 scones between 4 people which is not adequate considering this is what makes an afternoon tea. On a positive note, the room is very comfortable and has a nice vibe, and the servers were polite and friendly. The lebanese wrap was the only food item we felt was worth the money. Overall we left feeling very disappointed and underwhelmed. We paid £115 for this, and definitely did not feel we received value for our money at all. Worse experience ever! Dear owner, I never writed a review before ! My friend Saheel wrote yesterday one review behalf of me and you doubted of the veracity of his review, so I decided to write the review my self :

On 30th of April at approximately 1 : 10 pm I been to your coffee shop with my friend Karmi and her daughter. We ordered coffees, cakes and milkshake. After a little while a girl from the staff comes and she told us very rude that we need to leave as people waiting. My friend shocked by the girl attitude ask : but we didn’t finish our coffees and dessert ?! Ignoring us completely, the girl just start picking up everything from the table saying the timing for coffee and dessert is 1 hour. So, she finish cleaning the table making us feel so embarrassed front of everyone !! We had no choice than leave!!!

Dear owner, this is not the right way to treat a costumer! No one said to us there is a timing! We had no idea there exist such a places !! Honestly, who wants to go places with timing?? People going out to enjoy their time, to feel nice and be respected where they go! People spend their money on your business they expect and deserve good service and being treated nice and decent! No one wants to feel stressed, to drink and eat quickly keeping an eye on the timing to not be kicked out!!

The guy who wrote the review behalf of me didn’t knew if the girl was the owner or not, so in his review he wrote ” the owner told us to leave”. I can understand the girl she wasn’t more than staff , and you as owner don’t work there , but the review is the truth of what happens to us . Is not fake review and is not invented!! The girl who work there is your staff and make that happen! Honestly it was the most embarrassing and horrible experience we ever had in a public place, paying for what we order and so being treated so disrespectful! We visited this cafe for Brunch earlier this week. Firstly, to enter with a pram/wheelchair can be difficult as there isn’t a ramp, luckily only a few steps but a shame this idea wasn’t explored when designing the place as it’s fairly new.

We ordered 2 mumbai breakfast’s + strawberry milkshake, peach ice tea, English breakfast tea and some samosas, spring rolls & chicken croissants. The breakfast really wasn’t up to any great standard, the omelette lacked real flavour or any kind of authenticity. We all felt it tasted very plain, The paratha wasn’t cooked enough-really tasted like it just came out of a packet. Not crispy at all, the masala beans had the smallest amount of coriander or flavour- no actual masala flavour, even the strawberry milkshake lacked any actual flavour of strawberry or sweetness! We specifically asked if the peach ice tea could have no tea flavour, we were assured it wouldn’t however it still had the tea flavour. On a slightly better note, the chicken croissant tasted decent, samosas and spring rolls were great, the chutney served with this was exquisite- actually the most flavoursome item from the entire lunch.

Its so disappointing because the venue decor is stunning, the location is ideal with street parking available + oadby public car park. The customer service in store was amazing too, the presentation of the food was gorgeous, the service was quick but such a shame with the lack of thought gone into the dishes we ordered. This place has phenomenal potential and they’ve got so much right but its just the food!! Just wish it tasted better! We did manage to finish all of the food because we don’t like wasting anything and its been paid for- With regards to the comments made on why we didn’t mention it to the staff at the time about the food? we had a strict time limit with a baby sleeping in the pram so we couldn’t wait for everything to be remade again.
