We came here for dinner last week as we were staying in a nearby hotel. Online, both the menu and the pub itself looked appealing. I'd checked on the website if there were spaces for dinner, which there appeared to be plenty of as every time slot was available for three people to dine. I did not feel the need to book as every time slot was available and it was a Thursday evening, not a day where you would imagine it would be busy. However, when we arrived we were treated as an inconvenience by the man running the front of house. Initially we were ignored, we stood at the bar for several minutes without any acknowledgement we were there.. the pub was not busy and there was no one else being served at the bar. After acknowledging us, we asked for a table for three for dinner I stated we had not booked. The man kept looking up and down at me, my husband and father, this was very off putting. After checking the computer he said there was a table available and abruptly said he would need it back in 1hr30 mins. This was fair enough, but the way it was said felt like it was done to make us change our minds and leave. We were seated, but the entire time we felt incredibly uncomfortable and a massive inconvenience. It's such a shame as the food was amazing and the pub itself is beautiful both inside and out. I don't know why the front of house had such an issue with us being there, he appeared to treat other customers normally. Perhaps he was having a bad day? Or we were not wanted there.. I believe I know why, but this would purely be an assumption. However, based on the appearance of the town during my walk from the hotel to the pub I believe am I correct.
I'd like to say I would come back if I was staying nearby again, but unfortunately I don't think this would...

Read moreIt was a Wednesday night and the closest, walkable (not really; far for tired seniors) with a menu that could accommodate my extensive food allergies. Because we didn't make a reservation, we were seated outside, which was actually quite lovely. They were short staffed, so we had to go to the bar to place our order; no problem. The barman kept seating guests outside, and so the wait for food kept getting longer. I really wanted my husband to experience an authentic British pub. We just didn't expect the surly service or lack thereof. The food, which was excellent even though they had to change my salad after no longer available, and we waited for an hour for my dessert. Oddly, the barman justvkept seating people outside even though they were short staffed! Then, there was a substantial mistake on our bill, which again we waited to have amended. The "take-it-or-leave" attitude was so surprising to a tourist. We laughed and weren't offended as we really are of the opinion, having encountered this type of attitude multiple times, that Brits don't want or...
